IKEA close to enter the Mexican market

IKEA is exploring locations in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey to open its first store in the country.

IKEA Mexico, part of the Ikano Group, franchisee of the brand, opened an office in Mexico City in April 2018 and has started the search for personnel for some key posts, particularly in areas related to e-commerce.

“We are looking for the largest cities in Mexico, these three being the most important. We are also looking across the country in general,” Antonia Banuelos-Leon, marketing manager of IKEA Mexico, told Reuters.

The retailer will announce its plans within a month, including several store formats, said Banuelos-Leon, who declined to comment on the number of stores or the period in which the openings are estimated.

It should be remembered that Mexico, like Chile, Colombia and Peru, are the new expansion markets for IKEA in Latin America, the last three through a franchise agreement with the Falabella Group.

Resolute plans several curtailments in Q2, citing log supply constraints

Resolute Forest Products Inc. plans curtailments in Q2 at several stud sawmills in Quebec and Ontario, citing log supply constraints.

The production cutbacks will equate to some 30 million board ft. of lumber.

A company spokesman said challenging winter weather conditions in addition to a very wet fall had slowed Resolute's woodlands operations and related transportation, impacting log supply for Q2.

He added that the company did not expect any issues in meeting customer commitments, and was making every effort to minimize impacts on employees and suppliers.

EIA accuses German company of importing illegal teak from Myanmar

The London-based Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) submitted evidence to German and European enforcement authorities showing serious repeated violations of the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR) by a German company selling illegal Myanmar teak.

The complaint against Alfred Neumann Co. Ltd. is the 15th complaint of “illegally harvested timber being placed on the market in Europe” filed by EIA on the EUTR. Numerous authorities in Europe have previously found companies selling Myanmar teak in violation of the EUTR.

EIA’s forest campaigner Alec Dawson highlighted the fact that companies such as Alfred Neumann “connect the world’s most corrupt teak traders with the world’s most prestigious yacht-builders and clients, contributing to the [continuous] destruction of Myanmar’s teak forests.”

EIA has urged European leaders to have “tougher enforcement” of laws in the European market where illegal teak is found to be entering. The agency also advocates for timber operators “to undertake due diligence to minimize the risk” of supplying illegally acquired timber like that from Myanmar.

Ten European companies accused of importing illegal wood from DRC

EIA has raised complaints against 15 companies since 2015, namely Belotti SPA, Antonini Legnami, Timberlux Srl and Basso Legnami in Italy; Boogaerdt Wood, World Wood and Gold Teak Holdings in the Netherlands; Keflico in Denmark; Teak Solutions in Germany (transferred to Spain); Moody Decking, Stones Marine Timber, and Wattsons in the UK; Crown Teak and Vandercasteele Houtimport in Belgium; and Alfred Neumann in Germany.

Following the EIA complaints against these companies, one Dutch company, Boogaerdt Wood, was found in violation of the EUTR and threatened with fines. Denmark also issued an injunction to prevent placements of Myanmar teak on the market there and Germany has been turning back some shipments of Myanmar teak before they can be placed on the market.

Dawson added that despites these actions, no due diligence system for Myanmar teak meets the requirements of the EUTR, which are the responsibility of European government authorities.

“Myanmar teak has still been entering the European market and it appears companies are trying to test the will and resources of enforcement agencies, for example by routing shipments of wood through third countries to avoid liability. This means we still need to see better coordination and consistency in enforcement of the EUTR,” said Alec Dawson.

EIA said their evidence underpins EIA’s concerns that “multiple shipments of Myanmar teak for the company Alfred Neumann GmbH (Co. Ltd.) since 2013 were purchased from the businesses of corrupt Thailand-based teak kingpin Cheng Pui Chee, aka Chetta Apipatana.”

Japan to import less Malaysian plywood due to rising prices

Japan expects its imported volume of plywood from Malaysia to further decline this year because of increasing prices. Malaysia, the single largest plywood exporter to Japan, shipped about 1.06 million cu m to that country in 2018, which was a drop of 10.8 percent from 2017.

But Japan has imported more plywood from Indonesia, an increase of 11.4 percent to 977,500 cu m in 2018 from 2017. Year-on-year, China recorded a 1.9 percent decline in its plywood exports to Japan at 642,000 cu m

“Indonesian supply was over 900,000 cu m after two years while Malaysian supply was less than 1,100,00 cu m.

“Because of high export prices by supplying countries, total volume of imported plywood will drop this year,” Continue reading "Japan to import less Malaysian plywood due to rising prices"

Moody’s: Negative outlook for the global forest products industry

The outlook for the global paper and forest products industry has been changed to negative from stable, Moody's says. Global operating income will decline over the next 12 to 18 months, as wood product and pulp prices ease from recent peaks.

"The negative outlook for the global paper and forest products industry reflects a 2%-4% decline in industry operating income over the next year or so," said Ed Sustar, a Moody's Senior Vice President. "Increasing paper packaging prices and demand for paper packaging and pulp will only partially offset rising input costs, declining demand for paper and lower wood product and market pulp prices." Kronospan to build a new OSB plant in Ukraine

Kronospan will build a new OSB plant on the existing Kronospan particleboard plant in Novovolynsk in northwestern Ukraine, 10 km from the Polish border. The plant will have a production capacity of 280,000 tons of OSB boards annually.

As part of the OSB plant, Kronospan UA is investing in a direct heated dryer, a multi-daylight press, a 45 MW biomass boiler and a system for the discharge and purification of surface water.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is financing the construction of an OSB plant belonging to Kronospan UA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kronospan Holdings PLC, based in Cyprus.

The plant will consume a significant amount of wood as raw material and the main potential indirect environmental and social impacts are associated with the wood supply. To mitigate the potential adverse impact of the wood procurement and to ensure the wood supplied is of legal and sustainable origin, the company will purchase wood from responsible sources and give preference to certified wood when available. Kronospan's Novovolynsk plant has already been subject to the external FSC audits and the FSC Chain-of-Custody and Controlled Wood certification obtained in 2014 is still valid.

Currently, about 20% of the produced particleboard product is labelled FSC 100% under the C-o-C certification standards.

The total project costs amount to 168 million euros, the EBRD loan amounts to 116 million euros. Kronospan UA raises EUR 52 million from own funds.

Mixed trends in US lumber prices as market becomes uncertain

Framing lumber sales in US were inconsistent and price trends mixed, leaving buyers and sellers uncertain about the market’s near-term prospects.
Many continued to cite weather as the primary culprit holding back a more active pace, with recent wintry conditions giving way to flooding in parts of the Midwest. Trading was also affected by a number of trade shows and conventions that had buyers and sellers traveling and working from their cell phones. The Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price slipped $1.

Random Lengths Panel Market Report

Structural panel sales lacked urgency as warmer weather failed to energize the market. Improving weather in some key consuming regions had yet to translate to a pickup in OSB sales, and prices eroded. Small discounts were available across northern producing regions. Consecutive days of warm and dry weather boosted confidence in the Southern Pine plywood market. However, sales were mixed amid uneven demand. Western Fir plywood trading was dull in all regions, but especially on the East Coast.

Dubai WoodShow 2019 closes with record number of visitors, exhibitors

Dubai WoodShow 2019, the region's largest wood and wood machinery showcase, closed on a grand note with a record number of over 240 exhibitors from 45 countries with 48 first-time participants and a packed show of over 530 brands.

The show, which saw 192 repeat exhibitors showcase their products at the Dubai World Trade Centre, also recorded onsite deals worth $70 million.

"The record number of exhibitors and visitors for this year’s show underscores Dubai WoodShow’s popularity in the Middle East and across the world," remarked Walid Farghal, the director general of Strategic Marketing & Exhibitions, the event organiser.

"It also reflects the healthy performance and confidence of the industry and its vital role as a major driver for a healthier global economy," stated Farghal.

In addition to displaying innovative offerings, Dubai WoodShow also hosted a special conference led by Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) which has issued certification to close to two million hectares of forest worldwide.

The conference focused on FSC certification’s benefits to businesses with specific focus on furniture and construction sector.

Anushree Shukla, the value chain development manager of FSC International, emphasised the importance of FSC certification for professionals of the industry, as well as how FSC can serve as a strategic marketing tool for wood and wood machinery companies to access new and emerging markets.

"This has been a great show, and most of the companies participating this year have had outstanding three days," she added.

On its participation, Elizaveta Kopysova, the congress and exhibition division manager and senior project manager of AGT Communications Agency in Russia, said: "The show is host to some of our main markets including the UAE, Africa and also countries like India, Iran and Sri Lanka which serve as the key drivers for the growth of our economy."

Dubai WoodShow is an international trade exhibition that showcases the latest wood products, woodworking, machine tools, and new technology.

It serves as a strategic platform for suppliers, manufacturers and machinery companies to showcase their products, innovative technologies, production scenarios and large-scale machinery to key players in the wood and woodworking machinery industry in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Ten European companies accused of importing illegal wood from DRC

Ten European companies trading in timber have sourced US$2.26 million of wood from a company engaged in illegal logging in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Logs transported in the Central African Republic “European companies risk falling foul of EU laws on illegal timber,” , according to a report released by Global Witness this month.

The findings are especially worrying because most of the world’s second largest tropical rainforest is in the DRC, said the report. Tropical forests are estimated to sink 30 percent of the world’s carbon emissions--or they did, before illegal logging laid waste to many of them.

“Illegal and unsustainable logging is one of the main threats facing the forests of the DRC, which provide vital shelter, food, fresh water and a livelihood for tens of millions of people,” said the report.

The report tracks the logging of a concession owned by Industrie Forestière du Congo (IFCO), a timber trader which operates two concessions in the Congo Basin forest.

It claims that IFCO bought those concessions from Cotrefor, a logging company long accused of illegal logging, alleged to be controlled by financiers of Hezbollah.

IFCO’s website touts its sustainable practices. “IFCO is committed to… obtaining all legal rights to harvest timber in its concessions,” it says, adding that the company’s operating practices “integrate the preservation of user rights and the traditional know-how of local communities.”

Researchers for Global Witness, on the other hand, found that IFCO harvested timber illegally, that is, outside of its approved annual harvest area, between October and December 2017. It uses satellite images to demonstrate that logging--and logging roads--extended kilometers beyond the legal boundaries of the concession.

IFCO also failed to pay taxes and violated local labor laws, said the report. It continued illegal logging even after the regional governor attempted to suspend its activities.

“The company continued extensively logging the forest throughout March and April of 2018, seemingly flouting the ban put in place by the authorities.”

While much of IFCO’s timber was placed on Vietnamese and Chinese markets, said Global Witness, which don’t have systems in place to prevent the import of illegal timber, ten European timber traders bought the timber.

Among them are JAF Polska, France Noyer, Edwood, Angot Bois, Timbearth and Carbon Market Timber, TimTrade, Exott and Interarrod.

Contacted by OCCRP, Interarrod hung up the phone on a reporter twice.

Exott, a Belgian timber company, said that it did import wood from IFCO, but emphasized that it did so with a CITES permit:

“CITES permits are only emitted for wood from durably managed forests from industrial producers in DRC and under severe control. CITES permits would never be emitted to companies that do not respect the full forest and other legislation of a country,” wrote Tarik Hodzic, a partner at the company.

He added that Exott had said two years ago that it would only buy wood from IFCO if it went forward with a certification scheme. IFCO, he said, was in the process of being audited for this certification.

Agnès Aubertin, president of France Noyer, meanwhile wrote to OCCRP that there are bigger fish to fry.

“We bought a very very small quantity last year (from) a French company that bought these pieces in Congo giving us all papers showing from which forest it was coming from and our employee selected the pieces so he could see they were taken in the authorized concession,” he wrote.

“I think you should go in chinese ports and you will see the huge volume!!!!imported without any authorization, this is the clue!”

In a separate press release, Global Witness said that exports of timber from the DRC to Vietnam and China have surged in the past year. The largest owner of timber concessions in the DRC, a European company based in Liechtenstein, is illegally harvesting timber on 90 percent of its sites, it found.

More Russian plywood on the EU market

Russian plywood deliveries to the EU totaled EUR 504 million in 2018, a 13% rise compared to the EUR 447 million reported in 2017.

In the twelve months of 2018, Germany (+21%), Latvia (+16%), and Italy (+10%) all imported more plywood than in the same period of 2017. Deliveries to the UK also performed well (+9%),  as well as those to Poland.

European importers report that availability of Russian birch plywood has been good throughout the year. However, Russian plywood production was temporarily affected late last year by unseasonably warm weather delaying the start of logging, but was quite quick back to full production.

US lumber prices fall once again in mid-March

Framing lumber trading developed a stronger pulse for those serving markets graced with warmer and drier weather. This was the case for western mills active in Southern California and Southern Pine mills selling into the South and the lower half of the Midwest. Winter kept a hold on northern markets, where distributors and dealers dug out from recent snowstorms. Varying activity produced a mix of price trends, but the Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price slipped $2 for the week to $362.

Structural panel prices shifted mildly amid measured trading. Price trends were mixed in OSB. Some northern mills with short order files opened to discounts. Canadian producers sometimes sold blocks at double-digit discounts, but pulled buyers into the market for the first time in weeks. Southern Pine plywood trading was steady enough to keep prices of rated sheathing firm to slightly up, but demand was inconsistent. Western Fir plywood trading was more active in the West, as warmer and drier weather generated more inquiries.

Global lumber trade falls due to slowing markets in US, China, UK and Japan

In 2018, global trade of lumber fell for the first time in five years, with total trade down 7% year-over-year. The four largest importing countries, the US (-18%), China (-5%), the United Kingdom (-13%) and Japan (-6%) all imported less in 2018 than in the previous year. Much of the decline was the result of weaker economic prospects and reduced housing starts.

EU imports of tropical logs rise 11% in 2018

After a sharp downturn in 2017, EU imports of tropical logs recovered some lost ground in 2018 but were still at historically very low levels. Imports of 111,700 MT in 2018 were 11% greater than the previous year.

The value of tropical logs imported by the EU also increased, by 5% to €55.7 million. As for sawnwood, EU imports of tropical logs picked up pace in the second half of 2018 after a slow start to the year.

EU imports of tropical logs increased from Congo, the leading supplier, rising 7% to 29,600 MT in 2018. There was also a significant increase in EU log imports from DRC (+20% to 21,100 MT), CAR (+78% to 21,000 MT), Liberia (+69% to 5,500 MT), and Guyana (+56% to 1,300 MT).

These gains offset declining imports from Angola, from over 5,000 MT in 2017 to negligible levels in 2017, Cameroon (-6% to 17,200 MT), Equatorial Guinea (-21% to 5,900 MT) and Suriname (-37% to 1,300 MT).

Most of the gain in EU imports of tropical logs in 2018 was concentrated in France (+10% to 39,800 MT) and Belgium (+40% to 30,100 MT). Imports of tropical logs were very slow in Portugal in the first half of 2018 but increased in the second half of the year.

In total, Portugal imported 19,400 MT of tropical logs in 2018, 2% more than the previous year. Italy’s imports also increased, by 3% to 10,400 MT in 2018.
