Russia expands sawn timber exports to Africa and the Middle East, due to EU sanctions
In 2022 Russia increased the supply of sawn timber to the countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) by 17.84%. The export volume amounted to 1.2 million m3. In total, Russian timber exporters supplied timber to 15 countries in the region. The most active growth was shown by deliveries to Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. The main volume of exports fell on Iran (379 thousand m3) and the United Arab Emirates (334 thousand m3). The redistribution of supplies is associated with sanctions pressure from the EU states. “Due to the change in logistics routes for entering the foreign markets of Russian lumber, many enterprises had to quickly switch to the countries of the Middle East and North Africa. In 2022, shipments from the MENA countries grew the most in the UAE. The Emirates managed to increase imports by 83% compared to the results of 2021. This... Continue reading →

Ukraine war creates new opportunities in the EU market for some tropical wood products
Between April and June this year, EU27 import value of tropical wood and wood furniture products was, in dollar terms, at the highest quarterly level since at least before the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Imports of US$1.27B during the second quarter of 2022 were 11% more than the previous quarter and 25% more than the same quarter the previous year. In the first six months of this year, import value of tropical wood and wood furniture totalled US$2.42B, a gain of 29% compared to the same period last year. Part of the gain in EU27 tropical wood product import value was due to a rise in CIF prices. This was driven by the combination of a sharp fall in the value of the euro against the dollar, continuing high freight rates, and severe shortages of wood and other materials. In quantity terms, EU imports of tropical wood and wood furniture products in the first six months of this year were,... Continue reading →

Sanctions on Russia negatively impact Australia’s construction industry
With supplies of key laminated veneered lumber (LVL) and engineered wood products (EWPs) imported from Russia and Belarus, which accounted for 40-50% of these construction products, no longer available due to sanctions imposed on both countries for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Australia’s tight timber markets are now facing a severe shortfall of products. The shortage is already starting to impact concrete constructions for multi residential, high-rise, commercial buildings, and some civil works, as well as i-joist beams and timber flooring systems. Previously, Australia imported LVL and EWP from EU countries. However, the EU has also placed sanctions, restrictions, and tariffs on Russian and Belarusian timbers, and therefore are now using their timber supplies and production capabilities to meet EU members’ internal needs. This has prompted Australian timber industry... Continue reading →
