Price of birch wood rising sharply in Finland
The halt in Russian imports has pushed up the price of birch wood in Finland, which is in high demand for industry as well as home heating. Due to explosive demand since late summer, some Finnish firewood vendors have doubled their prices. "This energy crisis came as a bit of a surprise to everyone. The price of dry birch wood has doubled, and there is also pressure to increase prices further this winter," said CEO Pentti Karttunen of Maatukku, one of Finland's biggest firewood retailers, based in Vantaa. Some Finnish wood dealers shut down their online stores in late summer because they could not keep up with demand. According to Karttunen, orders were coming in by the minute, spurring a backlog in deliveries of unprocessed wood. Maatukku has raised its price for a cubic metre of dried birch firewood, also known as a stere, to 145 euros. Birch has one of the highest heat contents... Continue reading →

Russian timber evades US sanctions via Vietnam and China, says environmental group
Russian birch wood continues to flow to US consumers disguised as Asian products, despite US economic sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, a new report says. The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), a non-profit watchdog group based in Britain, has found that most of the birch products currently exported from Vietnam to the United States come from Russia. According to Vietnam customs data, about 40,000 cubic meters of birch wood is shipped monthly from Russia and China to Vietnam where it is assembled into furniture and plywood. These chairs and bed frames will hit the shelves of major U.S. retailers, the EIA said in a report. The group’s researchers spoke to five Chinese companies that account for 60 percent of China’s birch veneer exports to Vietnam and concluded that more than 90 percent of their birch comes from Russia. A Chinese lumber mill owner told... Continue reading →

China: Weak market for European birch timber, as Russian birch becomes cheaper
Some Chinese merchants said that this year, due to the short-term factors such as the downturn in the property market, the demand for the European birch market is weak, coupled with the continuous downward adjustment of the price of Russian birch which impacts the European birch. This results in a more bleak market in the European birch market. In terms of price, the merchants indicated that they were affected by the relatively high import cost. Even with the impact of Russian birch, the price of European birch remained stable. At present, the European birch timber in the Guangdong market, 2-4m long and 5cm thick, has a price of 2400-2600 yuan/m3 (EUR... Continue reading →
