Most recent trends in Japanese office, kitchen and bedroom furniture imports

While Japan’s office furniture imports have remained remarkably stable over the past 12 months, more volatilty has been observed in the value of both kitchen and bedroom furniture demand for which is affected by consumer spending and willingness to purchase durable goods, items on which spending can easily be deferred.
In April this year kitchen furniture imports fell well below the average monthly flow. For bedroom furniture a declining trend in imports first became noticeable in March and continued into April after which import values steadied.
Office furniture imports (HS 940330)
Year on year, imports of office furniture in May 2016 were up 8% but compared to the previous month May imports were down 6%. From the highs in January this year Japan’s imports of wooden office furniture have consistently fallen. Business confidence and a lack of investment in production capacity across enterprises of all sizes has dampened demand for office furniture.

China and Portugal continue as top ranked suppliers of wooden office furniture but in May this year shippers in Taiwan P.o.C leapt into the top three. It should be noted that China alone ships more wooden office furniture to Japan than the combined shipments from all other suppliers.
Suppliers in Asia account for most wooden furniture shipments to Japan with only Germany and Italy shipping a significant value of wooden office furniture.
Kitchen furniture imports (HS 940340)
In contrast to the sharp fall in Japan’s imports of kitchen furniture in April, May saw an equally sharp increase bringing shipments up to around the average for the year to date. Year on year May imports of wooden kitchen furniture rose 7.5% and month on month May 2016 imports were up 9.5% on levels in April.
Vietnam shippers dominate Japan’s imports of wooden kitchen furniture followed by the Philippines. The surprise in May was that Indonesia replaced China as the third largest supplier.

Germany features as the top non-Asian supplier of wooden kitchen furniture and in May was joined for the first time by Slovenia.
Bedroom furniture imports (HS 940350)
There was almost no change in the value of Japan’s wooden bedroom furniture imports over the past two months but year on year imports in May 2016 were up 15%.
Two countries, China and Vietnam, account for over 87% of all wooden bedroom furniture imports into Japan. The only other significant shipper is Malaysia but, at just 3% of all wooden bedroom furniture imports, the challenge is to capture market share from the top two suppliers.

Scandinavian Moelven comes with best financial result since 2007

Scandinavian  group Moelven released financial results for the first half of 2016. The operating profit rose to EUR 22.1 million, compared to EUR 7.5 million in the same period last year.
For the Q2 of 2016, Moelven’s operating profit increased to EUR 18.8 million, compared to the EUR 5.1 million gained in the first half of 2015. This represents a 46% growth, brought especially by a combination of generally positive market conditions and the effects of internal improvements.
“The figures show a strong improvement in operating profit compared with the same periods last year. We actually need to return to pre-crisis levels - that is prior to 2007 - in order to see better results. I am very pleased and would like to thank all employees for their efforts,” said Morten Kristiansen, CEO of Moelven Industrier ASA.
Operating revenues in the Q2 increased by 11.5% to EUR 320,000 (2015: EUR 280,000). Operating revenues for the first half of the year increased by 11.9% to EUR 600,000 (2015: EUR 530,000).
In June was the first time Moelven reached history operating revenue for one month around EUR 110 million, getting to have annual sales rate of over EUR 1.1 billion, mainly due to increased volumes.
Yet, despite improvements, there are still units that affect Moelven's result negatively. In the action plan for operational improvement and structuring of Moelven, that forms part of the long term strategy plan, put in place in order to reach the company's profitability targets, significant resources have been allocated to improvement work in these units.
The programme continues with high intensity and will contribute to increased profitability in the underlying operations.
Stable development is expected in the market for Moelven's mechanical wood operations. The positive trend is continuing in the project activities with good demand both in Norway and Sweden for laminated wood and modules as well as in Sweden for interiors. The exception is the Norwegian interior decoration business area where the market is declining. Capacity adjustments will be necessary.

Lumber prices in the US on a low at the end of August

Framing lumber prices caused lighter sales last week in the US. The buyers were more cautious because of the month-end approach, the bad weather in some parts in the South and Midwest and the weakness in the future of the market. The Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price fell $6.

Random Lengths Panel Market Report
The structural panel markets prices were mixed last week. Western Fir plywood sales were at pace, while the prices were on the rise. Buyers took advantage of the price fall and bulked up some of their inventories. In Southern Pine plywood, prices of sheathing were mostly static. Producers kept their focus on extending order files. Sales of OSB were modest in most producing zones, and prices eroded. One exception was Western Canada, where most traders sensed a bottom had formed.

North American logs&lumber exports to Asia down 33% in the last two years

The major wood products exports from the US Northwest (logs) and British Columbia (lumber) to Asia have fallen in value by 18% during the first half of 2016. The biggest decline has been of softwood lumber from BC to China, which is on pace to be down by 50% in 2016 as compared to 2014.
Exportation of wood products from the North American west coast to Asia was fairly uneventful up until 2010 when shipment of particularly logs from the US and lumber from British Columbia took off to levels not seen for almost 20 years. From 2009 to 2013, the value of logs and lumber shipped over the Pacific Ocean surged from 1.7 billion dollars to 4.9 billion dollars. Since the record high in 2013, the total export value has fallen quite substantially and was just over 3.3 billion dollars in 2015.

Swedish giant SCA splits

Swedish group SCA announced that, in order to further develop the Group’s two operations, it had decided to initiate a dividing of the Group into two divisions: a hygiene division and a forest products division.

"This is what everybody has been waiting for," said Evli Bank analyst Markku Jarvinen. "The businesses are clearly very different from an investment standpoint. The forest business is low return on capital, very stable, and the hygiene business is high return on capital."

SCA said in August last year it would merge its forest land and forest products businesses into one division, leading many analysts then to expect a split-up of the group.
The company said on Wednesday that one of the companies will handle the hygiene business including SCA's current business areas Personal Care and Tissue. The second company will be a forest products company including all forest products operations and all the forest land owned by the SCA Group.
SCA has expanded its business in the last years, especially on hygiene products, which got to account for 85% of the total sales. At the same time, the company cut back its paper and other wood products businesses.
Europe is the leading market for SCA products, where the ageing population is expected to boost demand for incontinence products.
SCA is Europe's biggest private owner of forests. Its hygiene business is the world's largest maker of incontinence pads and No.2 in consumer tissues such as napkins and toilet paper. Its forestry arm produces paper, pulp and wood products.

Canada-US: Fewer chances of a new softwood lumber trade deal

The US and Canada officials are depreciating the chances of reaching a softwood lumber trade deal before the October deadline, thus raising the likelihood of higher tariffs.
President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met in March and pushed the talks through June, but still haven’t reached any agreement, while acknowledging “significant differences” remain.

US-Canada softwood lumber talks won't seem to reach agreement by October

Despite many talks regarding the renewal of the softwood lumber agreement between the US and Canada, the two sides aren’t close enough on numerous key issues.
Martin Moen, the Canadian chief negotiator in the softwood lumber talks with the US, stated that is very unlikely that a new deal would be reached before the October 15 deadline. During the special meeting of the all-party, international trade committee, he said that the discussions were very intense in the past several months.
According to Scrap Monster, officials from both countries have held a dozen face-to-face meetings so far and the next meeting is scheduled to be held on August 25th. There are still considerable gaps that are needed to be bridged for a new settlement to be reached between the two countries. The negotiations are currently centered on the structure in which certain export quotas and charges are to be used.
If the mid-October term is to be reached without any new agreement, the US is entitled to impose tariffs on softwood lumber imported from Canada.
At the moment, some of the Canadian provinces have demanded for an outline that would allow them to get out of the deal even after it is implemented. Issues such as the regional exclusions for certain provinces and territories and the treatment of high-value products and joint-market development are also underway.
Because there are many differences within the wood industry in Canada, the Conservatives asked the International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland and the government officials to develop a national consensus on the new deal. Yet, the International Trade Committee rejected the proposal because the talks would disrupt the ongoing process of the trade deal.
As reported by Scrap Monster, US Senator Rod Wyden had recently urged the US administration to implement tougher trade policies against Canadian lumber imports. He had alleged that Canada has long been engaged in a system that allows massive subsidies aimed at protecting their domestic industry.
Senator Wyden added that imports of lumber from Canada at low market prices will hurt the competitors in the US.
