Constrained log supply could maintain price pressure in China
The price for logs in China has risen steadily this year on the back of anticipated increased demand after the Chinese New Year. The price for A-grade logs is now above 160 USD per JAS m3. The inventory of pine logs at the 23 main log ports in China had dropped in January but is now back to around 4.5m m3 and daily offtake has started again after the Chinese New Year. Log supply from NZ remains lower than expected. The previously mentioned wet weather and cyclone in New Zealand slowed the rate of harvest. This combined with debarker issues at two ports has caused several log vessels (spread across the array of log exporters) to wait for cargo or sail without being full. This is usually quite rare. Log supply from New Zealand is also likely to be reduced over March and April as workers become ill and/or are required to isolate, as New Zealand deals with the expected peak of the... New Zealand: Falling log exports and prices to China
According to the latest import and export data released by the customs, the overall export of New Zealand radiata pine logs (regardless of cross-sectional size) in November of 2022 to China showed a phenomenon of both volume and price declines. From January to November 2022, a total of about 14.8 million cubic meters of New Zealand radiata pine logs were exported to China, a year-on-year decrease of 13%, and the export value reached about US$2.28 billion. The average export unit price was US$153.33 per cubic meter, a year-on-year decrease of 7%. In November alone, the total export volume of New Zealand radiata pine logs to China was 1.51 million cubic meters, a year-on-year decrease of 3%; the average export unit price fell to the bottom value of this year's at 136.9 US dollars / cubic meter, a year-on-year decrease of 19%. The global forest industry in H1/2016: sawlog prices going up; softwood lumber markets growing steady
The Global Sawlog Price Index (GSPI) was up 4.2% in the 2Q/16 to $71.18/m3, the highest quarter-over-quarter increase since the 2Q/11. The Euro-based European Sawlog Price Index (ESPI-€) has declined six percent over the past two years after a period when the Index was fairly stable from 2010 to 2014. The ESPI-€ was €83.84/m3 in the 2Q/16, up 1.8% from the previous quarter.
