Currently, the average price is 229 € per tonne of wood pellets or 4.68 Cent per kWh.

Sweden: The notified area of final felling rises sharply due to bark beetle attacks

The notified area of final felling in Sweden increased by 13% in April compared with the corresponding month in 2018. One reason is attacks of bark beetle. It is the highest monthly recorded data in 4 years for the whole country in April and the second highest in last 12 years.

The total area of notified final felling in the whole country amounted to 17,364 hectares.

The notified area of final felling increased in all regions except for the region North of Sweden where it decreased by 40% to 2 733 hectares. In South of Northern Sweden there was an increase in the notified area of final felling by 41% to 4 356 hectares. In the region Central Sweden there was an increase of 31% to 4 794 hectares and in the region South of Sweden the increase was 35% and amounted to 5 482 hectares, which is the highest monthly recorded data for April in 12 years.

At the county level, the notified harvest area increased in 18 of 21 counties. The largest increase was in Blekinge County with almost a tripling of the notified area. In Kalmar County the notified area was doubled. It is the highest note for the month of April since 2007 for these two counties. Notifications also increased in Västernorrland and Värmland Counties with 60 and 55%.

The increase in higher notified area of final felling is plausibly due to the extensive attacks of bark beetle in regions South and Central Sweden.

Italian forests are on the road to recovery, six months after the most destructive storm in history

With millions of cubic meters of timber still on the ground, and summer approaching, authorities and environmentalists in northern Italy were engaged in a race against time. Over six months have past since a storm called "Vaia" hit four northern regions with unusually warm winds exceeding 150 km per hour and strong rainfalls.

It was Oct. 29, and the event resulted in an unprecedented damage to forests in northeast Trentino, Friuli, and Veneto, and northwest Lombardy regions, which provide two thirds of all Italian timber.

Germany: Producer prices for wood products on a downward trend

The economic downturn noted by the market research institutes is also reflected in Germany's producer prices for commercial wood products in March and April. While a clear upward trend compared to the same month of the previous year was recorded in February, it is crumbling in March, and eleven of the 26 wood products are already below the previous year's level in April. US is beginning to realize the importance of diversification of hardwood export markets

The fact that China has imposed tariffs on American hardwood products imports has sounded the alarm for the US timber industry. At the moment, one-third of the lumber produced at sawmills in the United States are being exported to the Chinese market. Thus, the Sino-US trade war is a major challenge for the American sawmill industry.

The uncertainty of Sino-US relations has increased the pressure on the entire industry. What is even more difficult is that the increase in tariffs coincides with the Chinese economic slowdown. For a long time, exports to China have helped the US hardwood industry in times of economic downturn, and the US industry has relied heavily on the Chinese market. But nowadays, many lumber traders  realized that this dependency on China was not a long-term wise move, and industry players are increasingly aware of the importance of market diversification.

There may be some opportunities in the United States, and there are rumors that some form of promotion will take place in the country. But expanding access is also seen as key. The Middle East, North Africa, other parts of Asia and Mexico are some of the opportunities, and it is equally important that many small and medium-sized enterprises in India use large quantities of wood.

The United States is also committed to strengthening existing channel communications and establishing new connections in Europe. Europe already has seven of the 12 largest hardwood export markets in the United States. Europe is not only a hardwood market for long-term cooperation in the United States, but also a high-end market with strong environmental awareness and has been committed to maintaining the sustainability and legitimacy of hardwood development.

For European customers, this means a new opportunity to develop partnerships with the US that can reach new varieties and distribute them to manufacturers. Especially in a world where environmental awareness is growing, maximizing the use of the most productive and renewable red oaks is becoming more and more meaningful, while one-third of the hardwood forests in the United States are red oaks.

Estonian Granuul Invest buys Texas Pellets assets

Graanul Invest affiliate Woodville Pellets, LLC submitted the winning bid in the auction conducted on May 9, 2019 for the assets of Texas Pellets, Inc. and German Pellets Texas, LLC. The assets include Texas Pellets’ Woodville, Texas pellet manufacturing plant and its Port Arthur, Texas port terminal.

Saint-Gobain to sell German SGBDD for EUR 335 million

Compagnie de Saint-Gobain SA (SGO.FR) said Monday that it has reached an agreement to sell its entire stake in Saint-Gobain Building Distribution Deutschland to the Stark Group, a Nordic building materials company.

Following the acquisition, Stark Group will significantly expand its footprint in the builders’ merchant industry in Northern Europe. SGBDD is well positioned to capture further market share in the large German construction market with consistent demand, which has shown resiliency through economic downturns.

The sale is based on an enterprise value of 335 million euros ($373.7 million) for SGBDD, the French construction materials group said.

Saint-Gobain said it expects the divestment to be completed in the second half of 2019 pending approval from European antitrust authorities.

SGBDD generated revenue of EUR1.9 billion in 2018, Saint-Gobain said. It is mainly known for its Raab Karcher brand and has 220 sales outlets employing roughly 5,000 people, it said.

Eight European woodworking machinery giants plan to enable machine communication of different brands

The production in the woodworking industry nowadays implies more and more digital manufacturing processes to gain efficiency and competitiveness through integrated data management and analysis. This means that woodworking machines need to be connected to each other and form a production network linked to an ERP/MES system or a cloud. Without a standard communication protocol connecting machinery from different suppliers, software programming is always required, thus affecting efficiency and costs.

For this reason, eight leading European woodworking machinery manufacturers (Altendorf, Biesse Group, Bürkle, Homag, IMA Schelling, SCM, Weber, Weinig) have formed a working group to define a common language, that enables a seamless communication between machines of different brands. The framework for a new standard, called “P&W, Plug & Work”, is launched at LIGNA 2019. This project is specific for the woodworking industry and is based upon the OPC UA standard (Open Platform Communication Unified Architecture), promoted by the OPC Foundation, an international non-profit organization.

Under the roof of EUMABOIS and VDMA, the P&W working group is currently defining a standardized semantic architecture specially for the woodworking industry. The plan is to finalize this ambitious and challenging project in early 2020. In order to maximize the benefits for the clients within the woodworking industry worldwide, the P&W working group is also cooperating with its machine tool manufacturers’ counterpart, which is developing a specific language named UMATI (Universal Machine Tool Interface) dedicated to machine tools.

This will assure woodworkers who are choosing solutions from any company taking part in the P&W working group a perfect and straightforward machine integration independent from their machine/tool brand, and IoT solution.

Forestry giants in BC show dramatic descend at the stock market

A closer look at any stock chart could reveal how the BC forest companies have slide down to three-year lows.

According to Business in Vancouver, the stock chart for major companies, like West Fraser Timber Co. or medium-sized companies, like Conifex Timber Inc., highlight the same outlook. They have all started to rise in the early 2017, with peaks in the summer of 2018, but have, since then, started to descend dramatically.

For example, Canfor Corp. reported $126 million in operating income from lumber sales during the Q1/2018, but $126 million in operating income from lumber sales for the Q1/2019. Moreover, the company’s stock price decreased by 65% in one year, to $10.93 per share on May 14, 2019.

Thus, during the Q1/2019, forest companies in B.C. reported lower prices for lumber in the US, together with higher costs for logs. Also, the new layers of regulations in B.C. may affect the market and lower future investments in the province.

Referring to West Fraser Timber’s profit reports, John Rustad, the BC Liberal critic for forestry, said: “It showed them making solid profits in Alberta; they’re making solid profits in their operations in the States and they’re losing money on their operations in B.C. Alberta and B.C., you’ve got the same market conditions. You’re struggling getting wood into the United States. The difference is, British Columbia has become the highest-cost producer in North America.”

As BIV reported, companies cite the fact that it’s becoming more and more expensive to operate in B.C. As a result, many companies have been taking temporary curtailments and eliminating shifts.

We expect the July 1 market-based stumpage adjustment to put severe additional pressure on British Columbia production levels, which could result in additional curtailments across the industry, given the increasingly challenging competitive environment,” Canfor CEO Don Kayne said in a recent analyst call.

Tolko Industries has already permanently closed its Quest Wood sawmill in Quesnel and eliminated one shift in Kelowna, as a response to the high operating costs.

Besides the shrinking timber supply and high log costs, the province goes through new regulations, such as:

  • adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People;
  • new restrictions on log exports and wood waste in the Coast Forest Sector Revitalization plan;
  • a new caribou protection plan that could take 300,000 cubic metres of timber from the AAC in the northeast; and
  • Bill 22, which could result in tenure take-backs.

According to BIV, the mountain pine beetle infestation and the increasing frequency and scale of forest fires have really affected the allowable cut in B.C., making the AAC to jump to 84 million cubic metres in 2008 as a result of the huge amount of salvageable beetle-killed timber. It dropped to 64 million cubic metres, and will decline to 57 million cubic metres for the next decade.

Moreover, the companies in B.C. also have to pay the US softwood lumber duties. Altogether, the Canadian wood market is very uncertain. In an effort to resuscitate it, the NDP government introduced the Coast Forest Sector Revitalization plan, and it is now looking to bring in a plan for the Interior forest industry.

The plans include reducing the log exports to release more timber for the mills in B.C., while also making more wood waste available to pulp mills and wood pellet producers. But this has led to a 40% reduction “in the monthly average number of permits that are being applied for – i.e., there is going to be less wood being logged,” Rustad said. He added that the percentage of exports from those logs that are still being harvested has actually gone up “because they have to recover their costs.”

According to BIV, the Green party is lobbying to have more coastal forests made off limits to logging. It is calling for a moratorium on logging in old-growth forests on Vancouver Island, which, if implemented, would cut into an already diminished coastal AAC.

Swedish Södra to lower purchase prices for spruce roundwood

The high supply of spruce roundwood in Sweden and Central Europe as well as the obvious slowdown in the global economy are causing market prices to fall. 
Thus, the Swedish Södra Group is lowering its prices for spruce assortments on grounds of high volume supply and a troubled market environment that creates uncertainty.
Södra Skog lowers the purchase prices for:

  • Spruce roundwood around 35 SEK / m3
  • Spruce pulpwood around 25 SEK / m3

''The adjustment of the roundwood prices was made due to the high supply of forest that we have seen in the past year together with an unsettled environment that creates uncertainty in the market, says Olof Hansson, Business Area Manager, Södra Skog.

US lumber prices rise sharply amid sawmill curtailments in BC

Lumber prices continued their sharp climb in June after North America’s largest producer said it would close one mill in British Columbia and eliminate a shift at another.

The announcement by West Fraser Timber Co. to permanently curtail about 314 million board feet of production annually added to a long list of Canadian mill owners who are cutting back amid limited availability of timber in British Columbia and low prices for finished forest products due to a slowdown in U.S. home construction.

In total, more than a billion board feet of production out of western Canada has been curtailed in recent weeks by mill owners. West Fraser had earlier announced output reductions both temporary and permanent within its empire of Canadian saw facilities, but the permanent curtailment it announced late Monday was the one for which the lumber market awaited.

Lumber futures have risen by a third this month amid curtailments and closures atseveral Canadian sawmills.

Lumber futures climbed 4.4% to $409.40 per 1,000 board feet on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange on Tuesday, a 34% rise so far this month. Aside from a short-lived surge in February, lumber prices have been in the dumps since collapsing from a record of $639 reached last May.

The slump came from a combination of lumber yards that had stocked up during last year’s historic rise and a wobbly U.S. housing market that has been stymied by affordability issues and uncooperative weather in key construction markets like Dallas and Nashville, Tenn.

On Tuesday the U.S. Commerce Department said housing starts fell 0.9% in May from the prior month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.269 million. It was the latest gauge to signal weakness in the housing market. On Monday the National Association of Home Builders reported a decline in confidence in June among its members, who reported rising material and development costs that were countering mortgage rates that have fallen to near-historic lows.

Lumber produced in British Columbia is favored among home builders for its softness, which enables easy nailing, relative to the tougher pine that comes from the continent’s other main production region in the Southeastern U.S.

Still, mill owners like West Fraser are moving more production to the South, where there is a historic glut of timber that can be bought much cheaper than in British Columbia, where prices are set by the government and supplies have been winnowed by infestations of wood-boring beetles, wildfires and harvesting restrictions related to caribou habitat.

The U.S. South overtook western Canada as North America’s top lumber-producing region in 2016 and has continued to gain market share.

In 2004, West Fraser produced 89% of its lumber in British Columbia and Alberta, with the remainder in the U.S. South. Last year, with more than twice the production capacity as 2004, the Canadian provinces accounted for just 55% of the company’s output, with 45% coming from the South.

“There is insufficient timber supply to support the current lumber production capacity of the lumber mills in these locations,” said Ray Ferris, West Fraser’s chief operating officer.

In all, at least six lumber producers in British Columbia, including West Fraser, CanforCorp. and Interfor Corp. , have said they would reduce output this year. The cuts add up to roughly 1.1 billion board feet, according to Shawn Church, editor for wood-products price reporting firm Random Lengths.

These companies, along with U.S.-based competitors, have been rewarded by investors in their stock prices. Canfor is up 30% this month while shares of West Fraser, which told investors last month that every $10 that lumber prices rise adds $90 million to its pretax earnings, have gained 22%, including a 3.5% rise Tuesday.

In the U.S., shares of PotlatchDeltic Corp. and Weyerhaeuser Co. have risen 16% and 14%, respectively, in June.

In energy markets, U.S. crude prices had their best day since January, rising 3.79% to $53.90 a barrel after President Trump tweeted that he had a “very good telephone conversation with President Xi of China.” The two leaders are scheduled to meet next week at the G-20 meeting in Japan amid trade tensions between the U.S. and China.

Shares of U.S. oil producers surged as well. Oasis Petroleum Inc., Whiting Petroleum Corp.and Continental Resources Inc. added 9.8%, 6.5% and 4.9%, respectively.

Natural gas got no lift from the president’s tweet, though. Futures for July delivery lost 2.43% to end at $2.328 per million British thermal units as forecasts pushed back the arrival of steamy summer weather in much of the country and predicted a relatively mild July. That’s bad news for gas producers, who count on air conditioning to spur demand for gas to generate electricity.

France: The bark beetle crisis pushes down the prices for softwoods at auctions

In the northern half of France, forest owners of spruce and fir are very concerned. During an unusually mild winter, colonies of bark beetles have not disappeared. Unless the summer is very rainy and without heat, the threat of a new outbreak is not to be discarded although the current spring is watered and mild.
On the timber markets side, the situation is not very bright for eastern France foresters. Christian Bulle, the president of Fransylva Franche-Comté, advises the members of his union to avoid cuts of fresh wood to the maximum, log yards of sawmills being completely saturated. 

Even at very low prices, Norway spruces and firs are hard to find, especially as many foresters have made precautionary cuts in forests not yet affected by the epidemic.
In addition to the risk of cutting fresh wood today and cutting it dry in a few months, eastern France's loggers are facing another equally destabilizing problem. In fact, the scheduled shutdown of the log supplies of the Burgo papermaking plant in Verzuolo (Italy), which is scheduled for next autumn, is a major change in the opening of the thinnings in much of northeastern France. The transalpine industrial company announced that it was focusing on the production of cardboard boxes from recycled cardboard and pulp and that, as a result, virgin wood fiber from forests was no longer needed.
In these conditions, the significant fall in the prices of fir-spruces (fresh wood) in unit volumes of less than 1 m3 is not surprising. In contrast, spruce and fir trees of 2 m3 and + appear less affected by the bark beetle crisis. If unsold inventories average 40%, prices remain stable for large diameter volumes (see table below).

The future’s not bright for the Indian plywood industry

The future hasn't panned out the way organised Indian plywood and particleboard makers envisaged after the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.

Benefits of the new tax regime which was supposed to help to the industry leaders have played out, but slowly, and in bits and pieces.

Enviva sold 30% more pellets in the first quarter

The US-based pellet producer Enviva Partners LP marketed 843,000 t of pellets in the first quarter. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, this represents an increase of 30%. 

The proceeds from the pellet sales increased by US $ 156.6 million, according to the quarterly report released by the Group. Including other revenues of $ 1.8 million, total revenue was $ 158.4 million, up 26.4%.

Adjusted EBITDA of $ 21.6 million exceeded the prior-year figure by 22.7%. Gross profit has doubled to $ 9.9 million. After deducting general and administrative expenses of $ 9.8 million, operating income of $ 0.1 million was achieved; In the same quarter of the previous year, the Group still reported a loss of US $ 11.8 million. Including interest expense of $ 9.6 million versus other income of $ 0.6 million, net income was $ -8.9 million; Compared to the previous year, the loss was more than halved.

Recently, Enviva entered into an off take contract with RWE Supply & Trading, which will run for five years from 2020, with a total volume of 1 million tonnes or 200,000 tonnes of pellets per year. In addition, Enviva has announced that it has entered into an off take contract with the Japanese Sumitomo Forestry. Starting in 2022, 440,000 t of pellets / year will be delivered to the new biomass power plant in Fukushima Prefecture over a period of 18 years.

New phase in the US-China trade war: Consequences on the wood products industry

On 13 May China's State Council announced increased tariffs on US$60 billion of US imports (some 5,140 products) which are already attracting retaliatory tariffs. The new tariffs will come into effect 1 June. This follows the decision by the US to raise tariffs on US$200bn of Chinese products.

In setting a 1 June deadline for the introduction of the higher tariffs both sides have created a window for negotiations as there are nearly three weeks until the tariffs would apply to shipments leaving each country.

Analysts in the UK have assessed the likely cost to US importers of the tariff increases. Top of the list is telecommunications equipment where tariffs could add US$19 billion to the cost of imports. The cost increase on wooden furniture imports could be as much as US$3 billion and that on seats with wooden frames around US$2.5 billion.

Consequences for the wood products industry

The US is the biggest buyer for Chinese wood product exports. The largest category of wood products to be affected by the tariffs is the wooden furniture products, which reached 11.3 billion m3 in volume exports to the US. Also, 40% of all wooden furniture exported by China goes to the US.

The new round of tariffs is significantly far-ranging in the types of products affected. Plywood with softwood faces will most likely be affected, as well as most types of engineered wood panels. Flooring is another category to be seriously affected. Chinese producers of multi-layer wood flooring have already been suffering from US antidumping duties imposed a few years back.

The Chinese counter-duties include a wide range of logs, lumber and panels exported to China from the US and come as a huge blow, as China is the biggest buyer of US wood products. Moreover, US hardwood lumber producers depends on the with the Chinese market having an approximately 50% share of all US exports.

Thus, the sawmills in the US will be severely affected as they will have to find other clients for these volumes, though they will also benefit from a higher availability of logs once the Chinese hardwood logs trade is reduced significantly.

Future alternatives are hard for the Chinese importers too, so the cost of tariffs will, most likely, split between the US exporters and the Chinese buyers.

Romania plans to ban the exports of logs

Romania's ruling Social Democrat Party (PSD) has announced the intention to file a bill to ban the export of logs from the country. 

The bill will be submitted next week and it's likely to pass as PSD has a large majority in the Parliament.

The reason for this legislative proposal is to keep the value of wood in Romania, for processing purposes and to allow only exports of processed wood.

This will stimulate wood product processing in Romania , an industry that has only begun to grow in the last two years, PSD explains its decision.

According to PSD, this is a law that the Romanians have been waiting for over 30 years.

U.S. hardwood lumber exports to China drop 40% in Q1/2019

Hardwood lumber exports from U.S. to China fell 39.8% y-o-y to 352.0 thousand m3 in first quarter with exports value declined 41.9% to $218.4 million.

Chinese share in U.S. total hardwood lumber exports decreased 12.6 pp to 42.1%, according to USDA data.

In the first three months of 2019, the total U.S. hardwood lumber exports dropped 21.8% to 836.0 thousand m3 with exports value fell 23.8% to $484.6 million.

Chinese tariffs to hit hard the US hardwood industry

U.S. lumber and log exports to China will be hit with the increased retaliatory tariffs China is imposing on these products.

The list of products affected includes both logs and hardwood lumber, based on information from Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Inc., which has issued an alert to its membership.

Taking effect June 1, the increases affect some $60 billion in products and are in response to the increased U.S. tariffs, to 25% effective May 10.

According to the AHMI, tariffs on log exports would increase as high as 25%. Ash lumber would rise from 10% to 20%, while oak lumber would increase from 10% to 25%. Meanwhile cherry and maple lumber is expected to rise from 10% to 20%.

China remains a major market for U.S. lumber. According to AHMI, China represented about 26% of grade lumber exports from the U.S. in 2018, compared with 21.2% for the rest of the world. The balance of consumption was to the domestic marketplace.

 

Booming roundwood prices in Norway

Following a favourable 2018 for the Norwegian forest industry, when a total of 10.7 million cubic metres of roundwood were cut for sale, the highest volume in 25 years, the first half of 2019 seems to continue this positive trend.
After rising last year by about 16 percent, in January-March 2019, roundwood prices have picked up by 13.9% over the same quarter of last year. Pine and spruce sawlogs are more expensive in January-March 2019 by about 6.5% and 7.8% respectively as compared to the same quarter last year.
Pulpwood assortments have become way more expensive over Q1/2018 in the range 28-37%, with pine pulpwood prices increasing the most.

Russia: RFP Group plans to build a second wood pellet plant

RFP Group plans to build a second pellet plant with a capacity of about 70 thousand tons per year

In an interview of WhatWood agency with CEO of RFP Group Dmitry Valtfogel said: “Currently, we are building the first wood pellet plant with the capacity of 100,000 tons of wood pellets per year. Upon completion of the second stage of construction, the output at the plant will reach 135,000 tons per year. Meanwhile, we are already working on a business plan for the construction of the second wood pellet plant. Its estimated capacity will be about 70,000 tons per year.“

“The immediate tasks are the launch of the first plant and the structuring of financing for the second plant. When these tasks are solved, we will already substantively discuss the further development of the wood pellet direction of our business,” Mr. Valtfogel concluded.

In 2018, the sales volume of RFP Group holding amounted to more than $200 million.

According to WhatWood research, the unused raw material resource allows Russia to produce 9-10 million tons of pellets annually. The total capacity of all Russian pellet plants is 3.6 million tons of finished products per year, but the average load of the plants is 50%.

Sharp drop in US lumber prices

The US lumber market took a step back after showing signs in prior weeks that it might break out of its longstanding malaise. Weather continued to play a role in some regions, but the consensus was that sluggish year-to-date sales had allowed too much supply to build up in the distribution system.
Despite reports that consumption in some markets was picking up, ample supplies were available to meet most buyers’ immediate needs.

Random Lengths Panel Market Report

Structural panel prices fluctuated mildly amid lackluster sales. A quiet week of trading left prices of OSB unchanged across North America. Lean inventories spurred enough Southern Pine plywood sales to maintain a narrow trading range in rated sheathing, but mills struggled to obtain premiums. Recent trends prevailed in western Fir plywood, including price direction. Excesses at mills and reloads lingered. After purchasing significant volumes last week, Canadian plywood buyers backed away to digest those orders.
