Norbord and Louisiana-Pacific exchange OSB mills in Quebec
Norbord Inc. announced that it has reached an agreement with Louisiana-Pacific Corporation to exchange OSB mills in Quebec. Norbord will swap ownership of its mill in Val-d'Or, Quebec for LP's OSB mill in Chambord, Quebec. Both mills have been curtailed for a number of years.
"This asset exchange will better align our portfolio of northern mills with our business strategy," said Peter Wijnbergen, Norbord's President and Chief Executive Officer. "The Chambord mill is larger and located in the Saguenay-Lac St. Jean area which is the biggest timber-producing region in Quebec. While market conditions do not support an immediate restart of Chambord, the asset is in good condition and is located closer to key markets, representing a better competitive opportunity for Norbord."
The Chambord OSB mill was built in the 1980s and has a stated capacity of 470 million square feet (3/8-inch basis). It was curtailed by LP in 2008.
In addition to the Chambord mill, Norbord's assets in Quebec include an operating OSB mill in La Sarre and a technology research and development centre in St-Laurent. The La Sarre mill is a key part of Norbord's ability to serve markets in eastern Canada and New England. Over the last five years, the Company has invested more than US$35 million to improve and ensure the mill's long-term competitiveness, including significant investments in new technology, equipment and processes.
The asset exchange transaction is expected to close in early November 2016.

Overview of the European parquet market in H1/2016; positive trend consolidated
The Board of Directors of the European Federation of the Parquet Industry met on 19 October 2016 and discussed among others both the parquet situation and recent economic indicators on the European market.
The good start observed in many reporting European countries during the first months of the current year has been confirmed during the first semester of 2016, when compared to the same period of last year. Although the reported parquet sales figures are not booming, the positive trend continues and activity seems to consolidate in most of Europe.
A brief per country recap is provided in the table below.
Market overview
| Austria | The information provided to FEP points in the direction of an increase of the parquet sales by 3% in Austria, reflecting significant increases of investments in buildings. |
↑ |
| Belgium | The Belgian market progressed by an estimated 3% during the first semester of 2016 and is expected to keep this pace up to the end of the current year. |
↑ |
| Denmark | Growing building activities and projects in large cities are supporting a 3 to 5% improvement of the Danish market. This positive development is forecast to continue. |
↑ |
| Finland | The situation in Finland remains the most problematic among European countries. Projects are delayed and the market fell by 15% during the first semester while it is expected to decline by 10% for the whole year |
↓ |
| France | The first half of the year shows rather good results with an increase by 3% of the French sales although producers of solid wood parquet are not experiencing such positive developments. These trends should continue as there is no reason to expect a sudden turnaround. |
↑ |
| Germany | The German market grew with an estimated 3% in the first six months of the current year but is presently becoming more "difficult". |
↑ |
| Italy | Parquet sales are recovering a bit in Italy by 1 to 2% but from a very low level. Despite increases in bank lending, people are still reluctant to invest. A positive vote on the referendum to support the actual government is necessary to prevent a new crisis. |
↑ |
| Netherlands | The Dutch market upturned during the first semester of 2016 by an estimated 3%. This trend is forecast to continue for the rest of the year. |
↑ |
| Norway | Following significant difficulties, the Norwegian market seems to stabilise |
→ |
| Poland | The few information available point to an increase of the Polish market by 1 to 2%. Poland is suffering from the political instability, especially the non residential market. |
↑ |
| Russia | Board members consider that the market remains weak in Russia, where cheaper flooring solutions have more success than parquet. | |
| Spain | The Spanish situation is comparable to Italy. The market rose by 1 to 2% from a very low level and needs political stability to keep this pace. |
↑ |
| Sweden | The market increase which was rather substantial in 2015, shows signs of stabilisation around +5%. |
↑ |
| Switzerland | The Swiss market is still reflecting the low housing activity connected to the legal limitation of vacation homes' construction. For the first semester of 2016, the parquet market fell by 5 % and is expected to decrease by 3% for the whole year. Nevertheless, no bad news is expected in the future and construction remains the only interesting investment |
↓
|
| United Kingdom | Board members agree that the UK market remains the most dynamic, especially the residential sector. Brexit has no local impact. The parquet sales rose by 3 to 4% during the first semester of 2016. |

UK’s steel industry could be saved with wood pellets
The steel industry in Britain is almost bankrupt. Yet, Sanjeev Gupta believes that he could save the industry by using wood pellets and sea tides. Gupta has earned a fortune from processing steel and production metal parts in Asia and Europe and now wants to aim his Liberty House Group at the collapsing UK steel industry.
Global oversupplies of Chinese imports, along with the high costs, have shut down many mills in Britain. Thus, Gupta hopes that by procuring distressed assets and using scrap metal instead of iron ore, may change the economic perspectives of the business, with a little help from the government too.
The solution would be cheaper electricity for furnaces, as the country’s rates are already twice as big as the European average. In 2013, the group owned by Gupta bought acquired a shuttered mill in Newport, Wales, and then bought an aging power plant nearby. Now, he wants the government some help as to adapt the coal-fired generator to work only on wood pellets. Also, he plans to invest in a venture as to use the Swansea Bay’s tides to produce electricity.
“If U.K. energy costs were competitive, we could make steel all day long. When we make steel, it will be from recycled material so it will be viable. We expect we will grow and employ more people, not cut jobs,” Gupta said.
As Renewable Energy World (REW) reported., reviving the Welsh mill would allow him to supply as much as 20% of U.K. steel demand. And Gupta is already considering expanding. Liberty is in talks to acquire some mills from Tata Steel Ltd., which would also be converted to make steel from recycled scrap rather than iron ore.
Liberty’s owner hopes to some subsidies this year, as he competes with other renewable producers for 730 million pounds ($1 billion) of funding. He will also invest more than $100 million in the station and in the acquiring of the machine to make the wood pellets. If he won’t receive the subsidies, Gupta will use recycled waste as fuel.
He needs the cheaper electricity as to run the arc furnace which will be installed at the mill. The forge will enable Liberty to make its own steel by melting some of the 9.5 million metric tons of scrap the U.K. produces every year. The mill currently processes steel that’s being turned into hot-rolled coil for parts used in Jaguar cars to Boeing Co. planes, as REW reported.
Guide on how to reduce the annual energy consumption of sawmills
The Ecoinflow project aims to facilitate implementation of tailor-made Energy Management System (EnMS) and reduced the annual energy use in the European sawmills industry sector through international engagement, collaboration and knowledge transfer. In order to help the EnMS implementation, the Ecoinflow partners produced the SawEnMS handbook, one of the major project outcomes.
Some of the main barriers for energy savings in the European sawmilling industry (SMI) are the lack of infrastructure and profitability with sale of surplus energy products (e.g. bark and chips), the lack of knowledge about optimal utilization of the energy input factors, and low awareness about the reduction potential. Although there are large energy savings potentials within the industry, a coordinated action was necessary for reaping these savings and convincing market actors to implement concrete measures. The Ecoinflow aimed to decrease the energy use by 6 % during the project by implementing a strategic tool for increasing energy efficiency.
The work focused on making sawmills go through a complete "plan-do-check-act" cycle and continue with the next one, setting new targets. In order to do that, it was important to disclose the most favourable methods to install power and heat meters to monitor the energy flows. The results were disseminated through EMS best industry practices and recommendations across Europe.
An EMS for sawmills was compiled by using:
- Starting points: International standards (ISO 50001, EN 16001) and the IEE BESS-project results,
- Inspiration: Existing handbooks and EnMS models,
- Usability in practice: Consult sawmills,
- Enhancements: Collaboration within the Ecoinflow network.
The project results contributed to map the road for the industry to meet the EU goal of 20 % energy reduction by 2020, and generated important inputs for the participating countries to meet the binding targets of the 2020 European renewable energy policy. The roadmap included studies of the different business-, legislative- and technological frameworks related to SMI in Europe. The EnMS was implemented at 30 sawmills all around Europe.
The handbook is a guide for sawmills on how to implement a practical and usable EnMS. By following the guide, the sawmill companies will develop a framework for working with energy management.

Outlook for the global furniture market uncertain
In spite of signs of a stabilisation and a more sustained recovery in various European markets as well as in the US, development of the world economy and of furniture demand over the next few years remains uncertain.
Difficulties in Russia, the low oil price as well as a more subdued development in China might all have an impact on global wood furniture consumption in the near future. In Europe, the financial crisis remains a threat lurking in the background and the short and long-term consequences of the “Brexit” – both for the UK and the EU – are impossible to predict.
The German IFO Institute’s Eurozone Economic Climate report expects recovery in the Eurozone to continue at a moderate pace. Private consumption is expected to be the main driver behind the small GDP upturn of around 0.4% in each of the first and second quarter of 2016.
IFO sees the main risks for further economic stabilisation in a possible escalation of the conflicts in the Middle East, which could “unsettle consumers, producers and investors across the world“.
Moreover, the authors of the report also fear that “the ongoing structural transformation of the Chinese economy, from an export and investment-driven economy to a consumption-driven one may once again lead to capital outflows from the emerging countries”.
This could lead to renewed turbulence in financial markets.
FedEx to run its planes with fuel made of wood biomass
FedEx, the largest express transportation company in the world, plans to produce millions of gallons of biofuel produced from waste wood biomass. The global logistics giant has signed a supply deal with US-based Red Rock LLC, which is currently building a biorefinery to manufacture this product from woody biomass.
Red Rock will provide FedEx with three million gallons of low-carbon jet fuel per year starting 2017 until 2024. FedEx now operates a fleet of 600 aircrafts and has pledged to use 30% of its jet fuel from alternative sources by 2030. Continue reading "FedEx to run its planes with fuel made of wood biomass"
Setra reports higher profits on increased exports to China
Swedish wood products company Setra reports an operating profit of SEK 86 million (Jan.-Sep 2015: 78) for the period January-September 2016. The profit includes non-recurring items in an amount of SEK 13 million (Jan.-Sep 2015: -21). Net sales reached SEK 3,043 million (Jan.-Sep 2015: 3,232).
“The market for wood products has developed in a positive direction during the year but we are not expecting any significant strengthening in the coming months. We have seen a better balance in the market, particularly for whitewood products where increased exports to China are a significant factor. Weak development in the key redwood products export markets in North Africa and the Middle East increases uncertainty somewhat,” says Hannele Arvonen, President and CEO of Setra.
In September, Setra signed a declaration of intent with Bergs Timber for the sale of operations at Setra’s sawmill in Vimmerby.
During the year, Setra’s subsidiary within industrial-scale construction of wooden buildings, Setra Plusshus, and the planing operations in Valbo were sold.
The result from these sales together with insurance compensation following a fire are reported as non-recurring items in an amount of SEK 13 million. In the previous year, costs for the discontinuation of planing operations in Valbo were reported in an amount of SEK 21 million.
Cash flow from operating activities for the period January-September amounted to SEK 195 million (274). The Group’s financial position is strong. The Group’s net financial debt amounted to SEK 83 million at the end of the period which corresponds to a net debt/equity ratio of 6% (14).
