Wood pellet supply tight in 2023
Supply tightness in the industrial wood pellet market may continue throughout 2023, but will depend on the outcome of European power price caps and supply-side factors. Expected high forward power prices for 2023 could hold spot wood pellet prices well above their 2021 average, but eventual volatility will depend on how well stocked utilities are going into 2023, as well as final decisions on the proposed EU and UK on power price caps. Russian gas flows into Europe expected to be significantly lower in 2023, with LNG likely unable to fully offset the drop in pipeline gas supplies, suggests other generating fuels – including biomass – will be able to make it into the continent's generation mix. Which could bolster power sector demand, offering support to prices. The carryout of inventories at northwest biomass-fired utilities at the start of the summer 2023 season will also... Uncertainty in Malaysia’s wood pellet industry continues, despite lockdown easing
Malaysia's wood pellet sector remains in a state of uncertainty despite an easing of Covid-19 restrictions in the country. It is not clear if this means a return to normal output levels, market participants said, adding that each state has a final say on whether biomass operations can resume. Malaysia's economic reopening conditions and standard operating procedures are also unclear on this and so biomass output is unlikely to return to pre-lockdown levels for now, participants said. But they expect the easing of Covid-19 restrictions in the country to increase wood pellet and PKS supplies. Malaysia's movement control order (MCO) had halted operations at pellet factories on 18 March and slowed collections and transportation of palm kernel shells (PKS), forcing suppliers to declare force majeure on cargoes and creating a supply gap. Malaysia is the second-largest wood pellet... Continue reading →

Sawlog prices declining around the world in the 3Q/2018
Softwood sawlog prices declined throughout the world in the 3Q/18. Consequently, the Global Sawlog Price Index (GSPI) fell 3.7% from the 2Q/18 to the 3Q/18, the second consecutive q-o-q decline. The European Sawlog Price Index (ESPI-€) has fallen for two consecutive quarters to €83.58/m3 in the 3Q/18. Global pulpwood prices The Global Softwood Fiber Price Index (SFPI) was practically unchanged from the 2Q/18 to the 3Q/18. However, there were price adjustments of softwood chips and pulplogs around the world with q-o-q increases of over five percent in Norway, Sweden and New Zealand, and price declines of more than four percent in Brazil, Chile, Russia and Western Canada. Hardwood fiber prices were generally lower in the 3Q in the key markets around the world, which led to the Global Hardwood Fiber Price Index (HFPI) falling 2.0% q-o-q in the 3Q/18. Global pulp markets Global... Continue reading →
