New Zealand wood on a high demand as China shuns US exports; export prices near records
Forestry prices in New Zealand — one of the world’s largest timber exporters — are near record highs, thanks largely to strong Chinese demand for pine logs. A-grade logs for export were recently selling for $NZ140 ($134) a tonne, up around 14 per cent from September, according to market data provider AgriHQ. In contrast, US futures contracts for lumber — or planks of timber — fell sharply in the second half of last year.... Continue reading →

Russian top forestry group executive: Ban on timber exports to China useless
Mikhail Shamorin, president of the Segezha Group, one of Russia's largest forestry industrial enterprises, said that the complete ban on Russian timber exports to China is not conducive to the development of Russian forestry, but illegal timber exports must be stopped. And some Russian lawmakers said that Russia does not advocate the prohibition of legal exports, but to prohibit illegal exports. In the future, Russia will strive to increase the export of processed wood products, and for this purpose will establish new enterprises, in which Chinese companies can also participate. It is understood that Russia is the country with the largest timber reserves in the world. The data shows that Russia has an area of 809 million hectares of forest and a storage capacity of 85 billion cubic meters. As the world's largest timber importer, China's timber production accounts for more... Continue reading →

Brazil's wood products export fell slightly in May
In May 2016 the value of Brazil’s wood product exports (except pulp and paper) fell 1.6% in compared to May 2015, from US$231.7 million to US$228.1 million. On the other hand, Brazil's pine sawnwood export values rose just over 10% between May 2015 (US$25.5 million) and May 2016 (US$28.1 million). In terms of volume, exports increased 36% over the same period, from 111,900 cu.m to 152,300 cu.m. Brazilian tropical sawnwood exports also increased in May rising 11% in volume, from 29,200 cu.m in May 2015 to 32,500 cu.m in May 2016. But the value of exports increased by just 4% from US$14.8 million to US$15.4 million, over the same period. Brazil's plywood export performance was mixed with pine plywood exports falling 3% in value in May 2016 in comparison with May 2015, from US$35.6 million to US$34.5 million. Cameroon confirms the 20% tax on exports of logs
Cameroon has confirmed the log export tax will be increased to 20% and has signalled it will further tighten checks on export documentation. It has also been announced that a mandatory bar code system for log identification, as used for sawnwood, is to be introduced. It is understood that Cameroon is ordering a one year complete halt on felling and export of bubinga. Producers report that it is their understanding that existing stocks of bubinga logs and sawnwood are to be inspected and inventoried by the Forest Department and then a decision will be made on whether stocks can be exported. This increase can be explained in two ways. First of all, with the continuous drop in oil revenues, the Cameroonian government is planning to create new income sources or increase the contribution of existing sources, to replenish a treasury increasingly called upon due to the major ongoing projects...
