Lumber companies in the US reached record profits
Record high lumber prices in the US, stable income for residual chips, and slightly lower costs for sawlogs moved 2Q/20 gross margins for US sawmills to some of the highest levels seen since 2005. Lumber companies in the US Northwest have seen a dramatic shift in their financial health from late 2018 when most sawmills in the region ran at below cash-costs, to the 2Q/20 when gross margins were at their highest levels in at least 15 years. Over in Europe, Swedish lumber companies saw slight improvements in profitability in the 2Q/20 because of increased prices for both domestic and exported lumber and slightly lower sawlog costs. In neighboring Finland, both lumber prices and net wood costs (sawlog costs minus residual income), saw minimal changes in the 2Q/20, thereby maintaining the current and historically low levels of gross margins. Sawlog prices in both countries have trended... Continue reading →

Finnish pine lumber is in short supply in China; prices extremely high
According to Chinese importers contacted by GWMI, the supply of Finnish pine lumber in China's domestic market continues to be in a state of shortage and prices are constantly increasing. The main reason is that the operating rate of local wood processing plants in Europe is low, the production capacity of Finnish pine is severely insufficient, and the supply volume has shrunk sharply, doubled by the shortage of containers. Chinese importers also said that the price of Finnish pine at the moment is extremely high, which directly leads to a sharp decline in the purchasing enthusiasm of downstream manufacturers. Many Chinese manufacturers have switched to other alternative wood species, such as beech. . At present, the price of Finnish pine lumber in Guangdong market is (2.1-6m long, 2-5cm thick, SF grade) is 3000-3100 yuan/cubic meter (EUR 381.59-394.31/cubic... Continue reading →

Profit margins for sawmills in Finland at lowest levels in 15 years
The financial health of the world’s lumber producers was mixed in the 3Q/19. The gross margins fell in Northern Europe, while they improved slightly in Austria, Eastern Russia, Western US, and Western Canada. In North America, lumber prices started to flatten out and increased slightly in the fall. Domestic sawlog prices in Finland and Sweden have been declining for over a year because of lower demand from the region’s sawmills. However, the reduced wood raw-material costs have not kept pace with the falling prices for lumber, which has resulted in lower margins for the sawmilling sectors in both countries. Finnish sawmills have never had profits as low as in the 3Q/19. The gross margins for lumber producers in Finland have fallen more rapidly than those of their Swedish competitors during 2018 and 2019, mainly as a result of lower lumber prices in Finland than in Sweden. The... Continue reading →
