Every downturn creates a distinction between companies focused on protecting today's earnings and those positioning themselves for the next decade. Europe's sawmilling industry is currently at one of those moments.
Across much of the continent, producers remain under pressure from a combination of subdued residential construction, elevated financing costs and persistently high sawlog prices. Many have responded by reducing operating rates, extending maintenance shutdowns, delaying investment projects and placing greater emphasis on preserving cash than expanding capacity. Even though lumber prices have stabilised in several European markets after the sharp volatility of recent years, margins remain under pressure as raw-material costs continue to outpace the recovery in finished-product demand.
