Chinese wood processing factories from Taicang forced to close
Once that China has taken a zero tolerance policy on pollution, wood processing factories in Taicang City were forced to close. An official notice dated Dec 20, 2017, stated that all factories must cease production immediately and must relocate by January 20 this year. Log imports through Xiamen Port totalled 1.905 million cubic metres valued at US$46 million in 2017, up 10 per cent in volume and 11 per cent in value compared to 2016, according to the Xiamen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. The imported logs were from 37 countries with New Zealand, Australia, USA and Estonia topping the list in volume terms. Imports from New Zealand totalled 962,000 cubic metres valued at US$130 million. It accounted for over 50 per cent of the total volume and total value of imports through Xiamen Port.
