Current dynamics and challenges of the Russian wood industry
The Russian wood product industry is one of the world’s most dynamic ones thanks to its increasing domestic processing of roundwood and production of higher value-added products oriented towards exports. The Russian wood product industry produces sawnwood and different wood-based panels. In 2018, these valued almost USD 10 billion, over 1/3 of the total Russian forest industry output. European part of Russia is the leader in wood-based panels production, while Siberia is the largest producer of sawnwood. The key factor in Russia’s wood industry competitiveness is the low cost of raw material. Russia has one of the lowest log costs among the main competing suppliers. For the last couple of years, the soft log cost has been between USD 40-50 per m3. For example, this is about 25% of the price level in China. Part of the favourable development when compared to the main competing... Continue reading →

Italy: Housing sector drives growth wood products imports
Italy’s rise in timber imports in 2017 is a key indicator of the sector’s recovery. Overall, Italy’s wood and wood furniture imports increased 1.8% to €4.6 billion in 2017. Imports from within the EU increased 2.3% to €3.53 billion and imports from outside the EU increased by 0.2% to 1.06 billion. Italy’s imports also picked up pace in the first quarter of 2018, rising 8.9% to €1.22 billion, increasing 9.9% from inside the EU and 5.9% from outside the EU. One market driver in Italy is an upswing in the housing sector since 2017, which resulted in rising imports of sawn timber, wood flooring, and joinery products. While the signs in Italy are encouraging, the recovery has yet to extend to tropical wood. Imports from the largest suppliers of tropical timber into Italy – Cameroon and Indonesia – fell during 2017. Italian imports from Brazil increased, but this... Continue reading →

Ghana’s wood products exports up 24% in January-April 2018
In the first four months of 2018 Ghana’s wood product exports totalled 115,225 cu.m compared to 92,937 cu.m during the same period in 2017, an increase of almost 24%. In eight of the 18 categories of wood products exported during the period significant increases in export volumes were observed as shown in table in the second picture. The leading species used for the production and subsequent export shipments were teak (35%), rosewood (14%), wawa (9.5%), ceiba (8%) and papao/apa (8%). As has been the case for several years, markets in Asia continue to consume most of Ghana’s wood products with lesser volumes being shipped to European markets and the US. The regional ECOWAS market accounts for a significant part of Ghana’s total exports but in the first four months of this year the volume shipped to ECOWAS markets dropped to 6,956 cu.m from the 7,192 cu.m in the same... New Zealand becomes world’s third largest log exporter-on booming Chinese demand
In the last two decades, the value of New Zealand's forest products exports has more than doubled, mainly driven by log shipments to China, Statistics New Zealand reported. In 2012, exports reached US$ 3,75 billion as compared to only US$ 1,58 billion in 1992, making forestry products third largest New Zealand's goods export, after dairy and meat. In 1992, logs accounted for less than a quarter of New Zealand's total forestry exports, but overseas demand, particularly from China, saw this jump to 35 percent by 2012,prices manager Chris Pike said. The value of log exports has more than tripled from 1992 to 2012: from US$368.89 million up to US$1.33 billion. Since 2008, the export value had increased by an average 22% per year. “This rise was due mainly to the volume of log exports tripling. Prices have increased by a smaller 16 percent,” Mr Pike added. The major influence for... Continue reading →
