Turkey to impose additional tariffs on imports of wood products from US
With its publication in the Official Journal on 15 August, Turkey imposed additional duties on US imports. In the wood sector, Turkey has introduced a 10% duty mark-up for Group 4401 tariff numbers. Group 4401 includes not only firewood but also sawmill waste wood in the form of chips and woodchips as well as pellets and wood briquettes. Especially the imports of wood chips from the USA are relevant. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 705,463 t worth US$42.96m were exported to Turkey last year. In the first half of the current year, deliveries of softwood chips to Turkey are stated at 322,871 t with a value of €24.65m. Russian wood pellets might enter EU via Turkey, avoiding ban
There is mounting evidence that Russian wood pellet exporters could be circumnavigating an EU-wide embargo on biomass imports from the country by exporting via Turkey. While exports of Russian pellets to Europe – including Denmark, Belgium, Italy and the UK – have ground to a halt since the embargo was enacted in April last year amid Moscow’s war on Ukraine, shipments to Turkey surged, data showed. According to Russian media, deliveries to Turkey from Russia only began in July 2022 but by the end of the year they reached a total volume of 200,000 tonnes. Turkey: 50% increased tax on furniture imports
On May 23, a decree by the Turkish cabinet of ministers increased the tax rate on furniture imports to 50 percent from 13 percent. Turkish furniture manufacturers welcomed this decision. The increased tax on furniture imports will have a positive effect on the Turkish furniture industry, as well as on employment, the head of the Ankara Furniture Manufacturers Chamber, Huseyin Taklaci said on Wednesday, quoted by Turkish media.
