Stora Enso might convert Oulu mill in Finland
Stora Enso has started a feasibility study and an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a possible investment in Oulu mill in Finland. The feasibility study and the EIA evaluate a potential conversion of the Oulu paper mill into packaging board production. The feasibility study is expected to be concluded by the end of 2018, and the EIA process is expected to take a minimum of 6 months. Currently, Oulu woodfree paper mill has a production capacity of 360,000 tons of chemical softwood pulp and 1 million tons of woodfree coated papers on two paper machines. The potential investment would include a new chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) plant, a brown-based cartonboard line with a capacity of 450,000 t/a and a kraftliner line with a capacity of 400,000 t/a. Resolute closes Fort Frances mill
Resolute Forest Products Inc. announced the permanent closure of its previously idled pulp and paper mill in Fort Frances, Ontario. The company announced an extended period of market-related outage on its remaining paper machine in January. The kraft pulp mill and another paper machine have been idled since November of 2012. Resolute is currently exploring opportunities to continue to operate the biomass boiler and electricity-producing steam turbine. The company is also progressing on three important investment initiatives underway in Northwestern Ontario: the construction of a new sawmill in Atikokan; the upgrade and restart of the idled Ignace sawmill; and the construction of a wood pellet plant at the Thunder Bay... Stora Enso divests Suzhou paper mill site to China
Stora Enso has signed an agreement to divest the key assets of its Suzhou Mill in China, including the land-use rights and buildings, to the local government of Suzhou National New & Hi-tech Industrial Development Area (SND). The cash consideration for the divestment of assets is approximately EUR 240 million. The total gain on disposal to be reported in operating profit amounts to approximately EUR 180 million of which EUR 26 million will be recorded as a positive non-recurring item in Stora Enso’s second quarter 2016 results and EUR 154 million is expected to be recorded as a positive non-recurring item in Stora Enso’s fourth quarter 2016 results. The total net gain including the closure related costs after tax will be approximately EUR 150 million.
