Germany: Sawlog prices start to slide – sawmills buy at very short notice
Prices for sawlogs in Germany fell slightly in April. The reason is the ongoing price pressure from the timber market. Numerous German forest owners also report very short-term contracts with the sawmills. The reason for this is the great uncertainty about further market and price developments. On the market for softwood sawlogs, prices fell slightly in April. However, there is no indication that this will initiate a major correction of the high prices. Nevertheless, many German forest owner associations describe the sales situation as very uncertain and with prices only agreed at very short notice. The prices for short timber (2b+ grade B) are mostly around 110 euros per cubic meter (m3). On average, prices of 105 to 115 euros/m3 are quoted.
