Russia boosts the export of sawn timber products to Eastern countries
In January-February 2023, the export of sawn timber from Russia to China increased by 7.2% to 1.6 million m³. For Hong Kong, the figure was 67 thousand m³. Deliveries to Iran and the UAE increased by 1.5 times and amounted to 64.1 thousand m³ and 38.1 thousand m³, respectively. Export to Turkey increased to 39.8 thousand m³ or 3.5 times. A noticeable increase was also shown by deliveries to Kyrgyzstan - 36.3 thousand m³ or + 10.8%. Exports to Iraq added 6.3% and totaled 25.4 thousand m³. In total, in the first two months of 2023, sawn timber supplies to international markets amounted to 2.6 million cubic meters, i.e. decreased year on year by 25%. The annual "Wood from Finland" conference which took place on February 15 and 16, 2023 in Helsinki attracted a record audience: nearly 500 global wood professionals gathered to update the short and long-term outlook for industry. The total exports of US hardwood lumber and veneer to the Middle East and North Africa region surged by 11% in 2022 to hit $107 million, said a report by American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) released ahead of a key industry event - Dubai WoodShow. To be held from March 7 to 9 at the Dubai International Exhibition and Convention Centre, the event will see AHEC host a large American Hardwood Pavilion with individual booths occupied by 14 US hardwood exporting companies as well as the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. Vietnam’s wood product exports fall sharply due to order shortage
Vietnam's exports wood and wood products slumped 34.8 percent year-on-year to 1.6 billion U.S. dollars in January and February mainly due to a fall-off in demand, according to the Vietnamese Export and Import Department under Ministry of Industry and Trade. Vietnam exported wood and wood products worth 800 million U.S. dollars in February, down 0.7 percent from January and down 10 percent from a year earlier. Exports of wood products, including furniture, contributed the most to the decline, posting a revenue of 490 million U.S. dollars, down 29.7 percent from last year. Latest trends in China’s plywood market
According to the statistics from the Academy of Industry Development and Planning under the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and the China Forestry Products Industry Association (CFPIA), both the number of enterprises and production capacity of China’s plywood industry declined slightly in 2022. There were more than 10,800 plywood manufacturing enterprises (down 14% year on year) at the end of 2022 with a production capacity of 208 million cubic metres per year, down 6.3% over 2021. Brazil doubles plywood exports to EU
In June, Brazilian exports of plywood to the European Union jumped 93% year-on-year to 76 thousand m3. The value of exports soared 81% to $33 million. Average price of Brazilia's plywood in the EU decreased 6% to $429 per m3. Brazil replaces plywood supplies to Europe from Russia, which is under the EU sanctions. In April, plywood exports from Russia to the EU fell by 40% compared to the same period last year, and supplies will completely stop from July 10. Brazil decreased exports of plywood to the U.S. by 27% year-on-year to 113 thousand m3 in June. Supplies to Germany increased by 80% to 17 thousand m3, supplies to Italy increased by 41% to 16 thousand m3. New Zealand’s export log prices fall due to the impact of exchange rates
In December 2022, the average export log (AWG) price across New Zealand ports has fallen by around NZ$2/JASm3.
