Unprecedented period of change in European wooden furniture sector
The last two and half years, marked from the start of 2020 by the Covid-19 pandemic and from February this year by war in Ukraine, have seen unprecedented changes in Europe’s wood furniture sector. The sector has passed through a period characterized by an initial but very short lived fall in demand in the second quarter of 2020, followed by rapid demand escalation at a time when material shortages and other logistical challenges greatly reduced availability. During this relatively short period, major changes have occurred in patterns of supply and demand, trade flows, consumer preferences and working conditions, distribution channels, design, and fashion trends. Companies throughout the sector are having to evolve new strategies in response to a transformed world. Flat-lining EU imports of wood furniture from the tropics
The EU imported wood furniture with total value of €459.1 million from tropical countries in the first three months of 2017, 1% more than the same period in 2016. This follows a 1.3% fall in EU imports to €1.64 billion in 2016. EU imports of wood furniture from Vietnam, by far the largest tropical supplier, were static at €232.3 million in the first quarter of 2017. Imports increased slightly from Indonesia (+1% to €87.3 million) and Malaysia (+4% to €50.0 million) during the same period. There was a much larger 14% increase in imports from India to €48.9 million. Imports declined 12% from Thailand to €14.9 million. The lack of any significant upturn in EU imports of wood furniture from Indonesia in the first quarter of 2017, immediately following issue of the first FLEGT licenses, will disappoint Indonesian manufacturers, particularly when considered against the... During the same period, EU imports of wood furniture continued to rise from other temperate countries, mainly those bordering the EU. EU imports from these countries increased 11% to €1.25 billion in the first 10 months of 2018, building on a 28% gain recorded the previous year. The biggest gains in 2018 were made by Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, USA, Bosnia, and Turkey. After a slow start to the year, EU imports of wood furniture from tropical countries picked up pace in the second half of 2018, and totalled €1.49 billion between January and October 2018, slightly exceeding the 2017 level. In recent years China’s competitiveness in the EU wood furniture market has been impeded as prices have risen on the back of... Continue reading →
