UPM Plywood is reducing its workforce, operations are being adapted to the weakening market
UPM Plywood has completed the change negotiations, which started in May, concerning salaried employees in the staff and global functions, and in its Finnish mills. The company aims at renewing its organisation and adjusting its operations to meet the reduced production capacity and the deteriorating market situation. At the same time, the company invests in utilising the opportunities offered by digitalisation. These measures will result in a reduction of 28 positions in Finland. UPM Plywood offers high-quality WISA plywood and veneer products for construction, vehicle flooring, LNG shipbuilding, parquet manufacturing and other industrial applications. UPM Pellos mills exceeded 10 million cubic meters in total softwood plywood production
UPM Plywood's Pellos mills have crossed a significant milestone of 10 million cubic meters in all-time total production. The operation that began in 1964 as a small chipboard factory has expanded over the decades to comprise three plywood mills. "Pellos mills are clearly one of our main production units. They account for about half of our total production capacity, and practically all of the spruce plywood production", says Mika Kekki, Vice President, Production & Operations at UPM Plywood. UPM mills Pellos production efficiency has improved significantly over the past two decades. For example, the volume of production per hour worked has more than doubled. More than 90% of the Pellos mills' production is exported. UPM suspends purchasing of wood in and from Russia; ceases operations at Chudovo plywood mill
UPM will suspend purchasing of wood in and from Russia as well as the UPM Chudovo plywood mill operations for the time being. The company is preparing a mitigation plan accordingly. UPM also informed on 3 March 2022 that it will cease deliveries to Russia. The suspension will be implemented with due consideration of UPM’s local employees, customers and stakeholders as well as the legislation in Russia. UPM continues to honour its obligations towards its employees in Russia. UPM businesses will keep their customers and suppliers informed of the situation. Company also continues to monitor the development of the sanctions and will make further decisions accordingly.
