China: Fall in CIF prices for softwood lumber imports
According to Chinese customs statistics, total lumber imports in the first quarter of 2023 amounted to 6.522 million cubic meters, valued at $1.658 billion, a 3% increase in volume but an 8% decrease in value compared to the first quarter of 2022. The average price for imported lumber was $254 per cubic meter (CIF) in the first quarter, up 12% from the same period in 2022. Of the total lumber imports, softwood lumber imports increased by 9% to 4.42 million cubic meters, accounting for 68% of the national total. However, the average price of imported softwood lumber fell by 10% to $203 per cubic meter (CIF) compared to the same period in 2022. Imports of hardwood lumber fell 8% to 2.102 million cubic meters, accounting for 32% of the national total.
