China: Imported timber prices fall as construction activity is slow

In Shandong, 2-meter and 4-meter the price of radiata pine fell by 50 yuan/cubic, and 3-meter radiata pine fell by 70 yuan/cubic; white pine/spruce and hemlock fell by 30 yuan/cubic. Latvia will strictly investigate the import of “conflict timber” from Russia
On December 14, the Latvian State Forestry Administration issued a reminder that the import of Russian and Belarusian timber and its products subject to EU sanctions is strictly prohibited. On April 8, 2022, the European Union announced the details of the fifth round of sanctions against Russia, including the import and export of timber, veneer, plywood, uncoated kraft paper, and pulp and other forest products to Russia. Among them, a grace period is given to some prepaid orders. After July 10, the trade ban involved will officially take effect. However, large volumes of Russian plywood and birch continue to flow into EU countries. The European Union has also found that a large amount of Russian birch plywood has flowed into the European Union again through countries such as Vietnam, South Korea, Japan and China. Relevant timber associations have also reminded companies that... Continue reading →

Africa: Few new timber orders from China
With the end of the ‘lockdowns’ in China and with the Lunar New Year holidays over producers had anticipated an increase in orders for the Chinese market, this has yet to materialize. Now producers are looking ahead to the end of February or even March before they expected demand to improve. In Cameroon producers are trying to adjust to the high export duties along with handling the administrative requirements under the recently imposed CITES regulations on a range of species including khaya and doussie, pachyloba and padouk. At the moment importers are showing no interest in absorbing some of the higher export transaction cost through better prices. Reports suggest the market for khaya is very dull but that there is still some interest in doussie and padouk for the Belgian market. Padouk producers are busy milling log stocks in order to ship by the end of this month but,... Continue reading →
