Brexit impacts UK’s timber supply chain, but industry still resilient
Difficulties with logistics and trading with Northern Ireland under new Brexit protocols are having impacts on an already tight timber supply chain, a new survey has found. But despite the challenges, the survey, conducted by the UK Timber Trade Federation (TTF), found that members of the federation are coping well overall following the Brexit changes. The survey identified logistics as the most pressing challenge – with a lack of haulage vehicles, inflated costs, and hauliers’ hesitancy to import and export goods in and out of the UK slowing down trade. Second is the Northern Ireland Protocol. Some 45% of respondents from Great Britain who are trading with Northern Ireland (NI) believe the Protocol is detrimentally impacting their ability to supply the NI market. One respondent stated that it would be “more cost-effective for our business to cease trading with Northern... Continue reading →

Survey shows pellet producers negatively impacted by COVID-19 pandemic
75% of certified producers have been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey conducted by ENplus®, a certification scheme for wood pellets, found that two out of three companies are already planning the introduction of new pellet prices for end-users, according to the organisation. The goal of the survey was to gather data on the current impact of the pandemic on ENplus certified companies and to provide information on possible future fluctuations in the market of high-quality wood pellets. 93 certified companies from 21 countries (most of which are based in Europe) participated in the survey. More than half of the negatively affected producers and traders highlighted the reduction in end-user demand as the most significant consequence so far. ENplus said an assumption can be made that this will be the main reason behind a decrease in production and trade in... Continue reading →

Argentina: The worst time in the timber industry in the last 50 years
Argentina's timber industry sees worst conditions in 50 years, as loggers' sales plummet more than 70% in last month, sawmills and furniture makers struggle to access government-announced funding lines. Among the sectors punished for the crash sales from quarantine is the logging sector, where sales plummeted more than 70% in the last month, according to a survey made by the Argentine Federation of the Timber Industry (FAIMA) between 21 and 23 April. The survey also reveals the difficulties of sawmills and furniture manufacturers in accessing government-announced funding lines to mitigate the crisis. And also, the inconveniences that arose from the breakage of the payment chain since the isolation began. According to the FAIMA survey, 58% of companies in the sector recorded a sales drop of more than 70% in April and 78% of the total relieved showed casualties of more than... Continue reading →

Survey – Impact of pandemic on Ghana's tropical timber sector
The economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the measures adopted to try and slow its spread are having a huge impact. The following survey offered by correspondents in tropical timber producing countries tries to clarify the consequences of the coronavirus crisis on Ghana's timber industry. 1. Are mills still operating? Mills in the country with available raw materials and orders are currently in production, as government announced COVID-19 measures, so far, were specific and restricted to the movement of persons. The measures exempted the production and movement of goods and essential services. Factory workers who show evidence of any form of IDs were not affected by the movement restrictions but expected to comply with social distancing. These are measures by Executive Instrument (EI) imposed under EI 64 and EI 65 on Public Gatherings and restricted movement of persons... Continue reading →
