Growth of Russian sawnwood exports negatively impacted by slowing Chinese demand
In the first quarter of 2018, the supply of sawn softwood from Russia increased by 1.8% (YoY) to 6.2 million m3, which is the minimum growth rate in the first quarter of an annual basis from 2012 (in the first quarter of 2012, there was a decrease of 5.2% YoY). The decline was influenced by the slowdown of sales to China. Deliveries to China have practically not grown in comparison with the first quarter of 2017 (+0.9% YoY, this is the worst figure since 2013). Ecological inspections of woodworking companies from the side of supervisory and controlling state departments of China were made. The tax on "environmental protection" was introduced on April 1, 2018, as reported by WhatWood. Russian spruce sawnwood from the Northwest reached a price of $280-285/m3, pine sawnwood from the Northwest of Russia - $265/m3; pine sawnwood from Siberia - $270-280/m3 in the port of Shanghai....
