Germany has now some of the world lowest pulpwood prices due to insect and storm damages
In Germany, softwood pulplog prices have experienced a dramatic decline the past year because of an oversupply of low-grade logs from harvests of insect and storm damaged forests. Softwood pulpwood prices fell in the key markets of Europe in the fall of 2019. This price decline contributed to a two-year low of the Softwood Fiber Price Index (SFPI) in the 3Q/19. With the hardwood fiber price movements having been mixed the past year, the Hardwood Fiber Price Index (HFPI) has not change much y-o-y.... Continue reading →

Sawlog prices fell throughout the world in the 1Q/19
The global flow of softwood logs from countries with a surplus of wood raw material to regions with tight, or costly log supply, and higher consumption of forest products continued to expand for the third consecutive year in 2018. Sawlog prices fell throughout the world in the 1Q/19 due to either plentiful supply or reduced demand for lumber, depending on region. The Global Sawlog Price Index (GSPI) fell 1.8% to the lowest level noted since the 2Q/17. The Euro-denominated European Sawlog Price Index (ESPI) was €81.08/m3 in the 1Q/19, a 3.1% drop from the 4Q/18 - the lowest level seen since 2010. The ESPI Price Index is composed of average sawlog prices in nine of the largest log-consuming countries in Europe. The Index tracks prices from the 1Q/95 to the current quarter and is published in the WRQ. Global Pulpwood Prices The Softwood Fiber Price Index (SFPI) inched up 0.5% in the... Continue reading →

Sawlog prices falling in most major markets around the world in 3Q/2019
A plentiful supply of logs coupled with declining demand moved sawlog prices downward in most major markets around the world in the 3Q/19. The biggest price reductions came in Central Europe, where storm damaged logs flooded the market. With falling sawlog prices throughout the world, the Global Sawlog Price Index (GSPI) took a hit in the 3Q/19 and had its third largest q-o-q decline in ten years. The European Sawlog Price Index (ESPI), which has been in steady decline for two years, fell another 5.0% in the 3Q/19, as reported in the latest issue of the WRQ. Global Pulpwood Prices Prices for softwood pulplogs and wood chips either remained unchanged or declined in the 3Q/19 compared to previous year. The biggest price reductions were seen in Austria, Germany and Sweden. The only region with higher prices in the 3Q/19 was Western Canada, where pulplog prices increased by 10% from...
