Finland’s forest industry output impacted by the global economic downturn
Out of the main product groups in Finland's forest industry, paper, board, lumber and plywood production volumes fell last year compared to 2018, when the international economic upturn intensified towards the end of the year. Instead, Finland set a new pulp production record was 8.32 million tonnes, according to the Finnish Forest Industries Federation's statistics. The weakening of the global economy towards the end of the year reduced the production of Finnish mills in the main product groups of the forest industry. Annual production of paper fell by about 14 percent and paperboard by 3 percent from the previous year. Timber production declined by 4% and plywood production by 11%. The Russian forestry sector reports growth in production in 2018
The Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) published the first final data on the volumes of timber production in 2018. According to WhatWood, Rosstat covers the largest percentage of producers in such sectors as plywood, particleboard, wood pulp, paper and cardboard. The share of enterprises that regularly report to Rosstat on these types of products is 85-100% of the total production in the country. The smallest percentage of surveyed enterprises is in the harvesting and sawing fields. According to the results of 2018, Rosstat demonstrated an increase in the production of particleboard and OSB by 15.8% y-o-y up to 9.77 million conv. m3. Plywood production grew by 7.7% y-o-y, up to 4.01 million m3. Pulp production increased by 0.1% y-o-y up to 8.58 million tons.
