Metsä’s new large sawmill starts up in Rauma, Finland
The new state-of-the-art pine sawmill in Rauma in Finland, owned by Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, has moved from production test run to continuous sawn timber production. The sawmill is operating continuously in three shifts. The new sawmill has directly created 100 new jobs in Rauma. The sawmill also provides work to approximately 500 people across its direct value chain. The sawmill’s employment impact during the construction phase was roughly 1,500 person-years. The annual capacity of the Rauma sawmill is 750,000 m3 of pine sawn timber, and the annual use of pine logs sourced in Finland is around 1.5 million m3. The sawn timber produced in Rauma is sold mainly to Europe and Asia. The sawmill’s location enables smooth logistics to transport the sawn timber to customers through the Port of Rauma. Metsä Wood increases sawn timber sales in Asia
Metsä Wood has signed a cooperation agreement with Itochu Group with the aim of increasing sales in the Asian market. The agreement makes Itochu Kenzai Corporation, a subsidiary of Itochu Corporation, an agent and distributor for Metsä Wood's sawn timber in the Japanese market as of 1 January 2015. Metsä Wood will also simultaneously dispose of its holding in Finnforest Nippon. The current agency agreement with Finnforest Nippon expired on 9 December 2014. Metsä Wood provides wood products for construction, industry and distributor partners. The products are manufactured from northern wood. Metsä Group prepares for wood raw material availability problems
Metsä Group is prepared for the problems of availability of wood raw material caused by the depletion of birch imported from Russia. The company has held co-operation negotiations at its plywood mills in Suolahti and Punkaharju, where an agreement has been made on the possible adjustment of birch plywood production. During the negotiations, layoffs lasting up to 30 days were agreed. They will be implemented, if necessary, by the end of June 2022. At the beginning of March, the operations of Metsä Group's only production unit in Russia, the Svir sawmill, have been suspended. Wood procurement in Russia for the Svir sawmill and imports to Metsä Group’s Finnish and Swedish mills has also been discontinued. Metsa Group starts to export sawn timber to China by train
A block train packed with 41 containers of sawn timber left Kouvola, eastern Finland Tuesday and headed to Xi'an, the capital of Shaaxi province in northwestern China, or the hometown of renowed Terracotta Warriors. It takes two weeks for the 1,800 cubic meters of wood products to arrive at Xi'an, which is playing a bridge head role in opening up the central western China, said Tommi Saarnisto product manager of Metsa Fibre, a prominent forest company of Finland. The journey covers Russia and central Asian countries, and the train will enter China from Kazakhstan through Alataw Pass.
