Encouraging revival in Italian hardwood market
One of the more encouraging, not to say surprising, hardwood market trends in 2021 was a strong revival in demand in Italy, a country marked by an almost continuous decline in consumption in the previous decade and which suffered severely from the early effects of the COVID pandemic in 2020. Italy experienced a large increase in hardwood consumption during 2021 as the construction and furniture manufacturing sectors were both growing strongly during the year. Prospects for continued consumption growth in 2022 also seem good, the main concerns now being on the supply side. Italy's growth has been particularly boosted by Next Generation EU funding for post COVID-recovery, a large share of which has been allocated to the country. In total, EUR 224 billion of Next Generation EU funding has been assigned to Italy in the 2021-2026 period, with about 50% earmarked for construction. There... Continue reading →

Canadian wood pellets promoted in Italy
The Wood Pellet Association of Canada has participated on a wood pellet trade mission to Italy during 19-23 of February. There were 16 participants, including representatives of wood pellet producers from British Columbia and Ontario. The WPAC visited the wood pellet trading companies Woodtech and Agrifor, along with Savichem, a major distributor of stoves and fuels, who imports ENplus wood pellets, mainly from Austria. They also toured Italy’s largest wood pellet importer, Adriacoke, who is planning to install its own pelletizer to process fines generated from the handling of bulk wood pellets. The group ended the tour with a two-day visit to the Progetto Fuoco (Project Fire) exhibition where participants met with numerous pellet buyers. Progetto Fuoco is a huge event held every second year in Verona. It features seven large exhibition halls with hundreds of pellet... Continue reading →

Italian furniture sector is more open to exports to countries outside Europe
The Italian furniture sector exports more and more to non European Countries, such as many other segments of the woodworking industries in various European countries. One of the symbols of these growing interactions is the second edition of The Salone del Mobile Milano Shanghai (which can be loosely translated as Furniture Fair Milan Shanghai) which takes place in China in November 2017. 190 Italian enterprises showcase their products at the Fair, twice as much as in the previous year, EOS reports. The increasing importance of non European markets is not limited to China: the sector is looking also at the MENA Area, and countries which were part of the former Soviet Union. While there are many opportunities, the Italian furniture sector is a little hampered by structural problems : the segment is extremely fragmented and made up chiefly of small and medium enterprises, which... Italian wood products sector eyeing growth in North Africa and Middle East
The strategy is that of looking at medium-long-term developments, without being too influenced by the signs of economic instability to which the Middle Eastern and North African countries have historically accustomed Italian entrepreneurs. “Two elements make these potential sales markets very important for the Italian wood production chain, from manufacturers of machineries and technologies, to panel and finishing companies, to the construction companies,” explains Paolo Fantoni, the director of Made Eventi, the FederlegnoArredo company that organizes Made Expo, the building construction and architecture fair. “The traditional lack of the raw material wood, which often makes it cheaper to import the semi-finished products rather than the raw logs, and the heavy rate of urbanization, which brings with it significant investments in public and private construction.” That’s...
