Japan: Projects to replace coal with wood pellets in power plants
The Japanese maker of heavy equipment, IHI Corp., is advancing a proposal for a new method to expand the ratio of wood biomass that could be burned at coal-fired power plants through increasing the pressure to curb the carbon dioxide emissions that result from power generation, according to Bloomberg Business. IHI Corp., based in Tokyo, predicts that the machine is able to boost the ratio of biomass to nearly 25% by retrofitting the mills that grind coal when they prepare for burning, as to be able to use more wood pellets. Also, when the wood biomass decreases, the mills can easily switch back to grind coal. This wouldn’t be the first machine to mix wood pellets by using mills intended to grind coal.
