Germany, Sweden boost softwood lumber exports to the US
In February 2022, Sweden’s exports of softwood lumber to the U.S. jumped tenfold year-on-year to 107.7 thousand m3. The value of exports soared 1120% to $57.1 million. Average price of softwood lumber increased 12.1% to $529.9 per m3. Germany’s exports of softwood lumber to the U.S. increased 82.1% year-on-year to 221.5 thousand m3, in February. The value of exports soared 98.8% to $94.8 million. Average price of softwood lumber expanded 9.2% to $427.9 per m3. Canada’s share amounted to 81.4% of the U.S.’ total softwood lumber imports in February. Canada is United States’ biggest softwood lumber exporter with second-ranked Germany at 7.6% of total exports, while Sweden takes 3.7% and Austria 1.7%. German furniture industry reports growth for the first half on booming exports to China and India
The German furniture industry reaches its fourth year of growth in 2017. During the first half of the year, the sales in the furniture industry amounted to nearly EUR 9 billion, a 0.5% increase from the previous year. After a successful year 2016, with a turnover plus of 3.2%, the good results of the previous year could be slightly exceeded, the Association of the German Furniture Industry, VDM, reports. The main contributor to this results is the foreign turnover of German furniture manufacturers, which rose by 1.7% in the first half of the year, while domestic sales stagnated compared with the previous year. The export sector was able to make an important contribution to the growth of the industry, through the demand in important European sales markets and the positive economic development in the largest growth markets outside the EU, such as China and India. German exports of logs to China more than double this year
In the January-May period, log imports to China from Russia declined 26.2 percent year-over-year to 3.6 million m3 with import value dropped by 27.2 percent to $439.8 million. US log exports to China fell 39.5 percent to 1.6 million m3, export value decreased 44.6 percent to US$338.4 million. The share of Russia in Chinese log imports slid 4.97 percentage points to 14.3 percent and share of US dropped 4.16 percentage points to 6.5 percent, according to China Customs data. From January through May, log imports to China from New Zealand expanded 15.4 percent to 7.4 million m3 with import value surged 13.2 percent to US$1.04 billion. Australian log exports to China jumped 29.9 percent to 2.5 million m3, while average price declined 18.5 percent to US$109 per m3.
