New EU Forest Strategy welcomed by European wood industries
CEI-Bois & EOS welcome the new EU forest strategy passed on Tuesday (September 13) by the European Parliament. ‘A new EU Forest Strategy for 2030 – Sustainable Forest Management in Europe’ is clear in its recognition of the ability of wood products to both store carbon and substitute for more carbon intensive materials, CEI-Bois & EOS say in a common press release. At the same time these wood products are both renewable and recyclable. CEI-Bois & EOS particularly welcome the recognition that “wood is the only significant natural renewable resource that has the potential to replace some very energy-intensive materials, such as cement and plastics, and will be in greater demand in the future”. The new strategy is right to acknowledge there are concerns around a reliable and sustainable wood supply, a situation exacerbated by Russia’s war on Ukraine, hence - like... Continue reading →

Ukraine war: Shock in the wood product value chain to be expected, timber trade bodies say
The European timber industry is watching with great concern Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the correlated economic and financial implications. European sanctions against trading with Russia and Belarus are expected to produce a shock in the wood product value chain. The war in Ukraine is already impacting transport and supply chains in several countries. Following a meeting of the main trade bodies for the timber industry – CEI-Bois (the European Confederation of Woodworking Industries) and EOS (the European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry) – it was recognised that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine poses a real threat to peace and security in Europe while direct consequences on the timber business should be expected. At the same time, the European timber industry understands the decisions on a trade ban between Europe and Belarus as informed by the Council Regulation... Continue reading →

ISC 2020: The Covid-19 pandemic impact on the softwood market
On 8 October 2020 the 68th edition of the International Softwood Conference was held for the first time ever online. Not even the Covid‐19 pandemic could stop producers and traders of softwood lumber from organizing their annual gathering. The Conference was, as usual, organized by the European Organization of the Sawmill Industries (EOS) and the European Timber Trade Federation (ETTF). While the appeal of a physical International Softwood Conference remains unaltered, participants of the first‐ever online International Softwood Conference which took place on October 8 were not disappointed: as usual, the presentations were first‐class and attendees could draw many useful insights from them. The remit of this year’s presenters was particularly challenging as the goal of the organizers was to provide a forward‐looking event which anticipates what the short‐ and... Continue reading →

This year’s International Softwood Conference to take place digitally
The European Timber Association (ETTF) and the European Organization of Sawmills (EOS) announce that the 68th International Softwood Conference, originally planned to be held in Helsinki from October 6-9, 2020, will now take place digitally in a concentrated form on October 8, 2020. "The spreading COVID-19 pandemic, which has been keeping Europe and the rest of the world in suspense for a few months, gave us the feeling that we should take responsibility and choose a new ISC format," said Silvia Melegari , EOS Secretary General. The Finnish Sawmill Association will host the 69th International Softwood Conference 2021 in Helsinki next year. The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting trade and has negative effects on the supply chain. It is still unclear whether these measures are temporary or will have a lasting impact. As part of the digital ISC 2020, there is the opportunity to... Continue reading →
