Germany: Wood auctions reveal high prices for hardwoods, oaks especially
Recent auctions in Germany reveal considerably higher prices for hardwoods, and especially for oaks. The auction in Wettenberg in Hessen, Germany, approx. 60 kilometers north of Frankfurt a.M., on the 15th of December 2022. 494 cubic meters of oak stems from state-, municipal-, and private forests were offered at the auction. 26 bidders from Austria, France, the Netherlands, and Germany submitted bids. Even though many of the offered stems had lower quality than the year before due to drought and heat damages, the prices were higher. The forest owners were (of course) very satisfied with the situation as they all are facing vast reforestation after years of bark-beetle and drought damage to their forests and need financing for that. Rules for US ash lumber exports to the EU have changed
Starting December 18, 2018 the rules for shipping ash lumber originating from Canada and the United States has changed. The only approved option for exporting ash lumber to the EU is the NHLA KD Certificate Program as proof of treatment to obtain a Phyto-Sanitary Certificate. As announced by USDA-APHIS, "Shipments of Ash lumber certified under the 2.5cm beneath the bark lumber will be allowed a grace period for the wood already in route. The last date such a shipment can arrive and gain entry in to the EU is February 10, 2019, which should cover any shipments in route, even with delays. The 2.5cm option for new shipments cannot be used." All ash originating from Canada or the United States and traveling to the European Union must be in the "systems approach".
