The French government wants to “boost” the timber industry with 300 million euro aid
“We must boost the wood industry”, said the French Prime Minister Jean Castex, on Saturday July 24, during a visit of the Piveteaubois sawmill, the French leader in construction timber located in Essarts en Bocage, in Vendée. And for that, the government is ready to hand over the wallet. In addition to the 200 million euros already planned as part of the France Relance plan – including 150 dedicated to reforestation and 50 to modernize the sector – the Prime Minister has promised an additional envelope of 100 million euros, that can be mobilized in 2021-2022. He also specified that the timber industry “Will have its share” in the investment plan “To build the France of 2030” which will be presented at the start of the school year after its announcement by Emmanuel Macron on July 12. Canada launches CAD$867M package to protect softwood lumber industry from impact of US duties
This week Jim Carr, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of International Trade, announced CAD$867 million in measures to support forest industry workers and communities affected by U.S. measures targeting softwood lumber. This includes federal loans and loan guarantees to complement provincial efforts for viable Canadian companies. Export Development Canada (EDC) will make commercial financing and risk management solutions — including loans and loan guarantees — valued at up to $500 million available to assist viable forestry companies. The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) will make $105 million in commercial financing available to help eligible forestry companies in the short and medium term.
