New Zealand sawmill shuts down, due to skyrocketing log prices paid by the Chinese
New Zealand's Waverley Sawmill based in South Taranaki, which has traded since at least 1932, has been sold and the new owner has decided it is no longer viable. The sawmill has now been bought by Spectrum Group, which owns mills in Gisborne and Te Kuiti and several forests, including one in Whanganui. The chief executive of New Zealand's Wood Processing and Manufacturing Association (WPMA), Dr Jon Tanner, has been lobbying the Government to improve conditions for wood processors since March last year, the Whanganui Chronicle reported.
