German sawmilling sector to hold online conference to discuss economic challenges

The German sawmilling industry is to give an online economic update to its members and the press on June 27 in view of what it calls “economic challenges” facing the sector.

The German Sawmill and Timber Industry Association (DeSH), which represents two-thirds of the logs being cut in Germany and is a lobbying voice for sawmillers, says Germany is facing major economic challenges.

“The energy crisis, increased costs, delivery bottlenecks and weak sales markets are putting the entire industry under pressure,” it said.

“In the past few months, there have been significant upheavals not only in Germany but also on the world markets, with noticeable consequences for the domestic economy.”

In view of these developments, DeSH conducted a survey on the economic situation among its member companies. The strong decline in construction activity in Germany and abroad and a lack of impetus from the downstream economic sectors are only part of the numerous challenges the industry is currently facing.

DeSH President Jörn Kimmich will give an overview of the current economic situation in the sawmill and timber industry in Germany and an outlook for the coming months at the semi-annual online (Zoom) press conference on June 27.
